VIDEO: BBC News - Creating music accessible for Deaf children. (Captioned)

Lying on a sound box: Deaf children listen to music.

The National Orchestra of Wales has staged a series of workshops and concerts for Deaf people, many of them children, to explore how it is possible to experience music without being able to hear it fully.

The National Orchestra of Wales has been staging unique workshops and concerts for Deaf people. Radio 4 reporter Andrew Bomford discovers children listening to music in a very physical way and speaks to those behind it. Here he blogs about his emotional day.

I'll admit that I am a bit weepy sometimes. I cried at the end of Les Miserables, so the moment that the Welsh National Orchestra string section got started, and Katherine Mount stood there, signing and singing to her profoundly deaf - but clearly enraptured - ten year old son Ethan, I wasn't surprised to feel myself choking up again. Watch Katherine Mount singing Ethan's Song on YouTube

It was towards the end of a long, joyful, but emotionally draining day with the orchestra and children from The Ysgol Maes Dyfan special school in Barry near Cardiff. Some of them are almost completely deaf and others have serious hearing problems, but the joy and enthusiasm shown by the children in their appreciation of the music they were experiencing was wonderful to see. ... She is Deaf, But a Little d ?

She is Deaf, but a little d?

Basically in a Deaf community you are either a little d or a big D. People would say, She is a little d as she can talk and she is in the hearing community and she have cochlear implants but she still have big D traits? like having a lot of Deaf friends and she can sign. So what does that make her then?

She is a big D - DEAF!

Stolen Futures Petition

LONDON - Stolen Futures petition. As this e-petition has received more than 10,000 signatures, the relevant Government department have provided the following response.

As the National Deaf Children’s Society acknowledge in its ‘Stolen Futures’ report, the Department for Education has already taken action to protect the resources available for special educational needs (SEN) provision, including support for Deaf Children. We have ensured that the Dedicated Schools Grant is, overall, at the same cash level per pupil as in 2010-11. We have also announced that we will not seek to recover SEN funding from local authorities where schools have converted to Academy status. This should help protect services on the ground at a time of transition and emphasises our commitment to improving the system of support for disabled children and those with SEN.

Government, at both national and local level, is having to make tough choices given the current financial environment. Those decisions, however, must also be based on a good assessment of local need and well thought through and transparent. Most importantly, families should have clear, accessible information about their rights and the support available to them. This petition has been initiated by the National Deaf Children’s Society.

Communication Barriers In Sex Education Put Deaf People At Risk

LONDON (The Guardian) - Communication barriers in sex education put Deaf people at risk.

A lack of resources in sex education for young, Deaf people is leaving many without the knowledge or skills to keep safe and recognise healthy sexual relationships.

There is a telling moment in a documentary called Snapshot: Dicing with Sex when a group of young Deaf people are shown cards with different words on them. They all instantly recognise the words Facebook, Wii and YouTube, but the words syphilis, genital warts and hepatitis ABC are met with blank expressions.

Broadcast in sign language on digital TV in 2010, the documentary revealed a remarkably uninformed attitude to sex, with several young Deaf people saying they preferred not to use condoms, despite experiencing sexually transmitted infection (STIs) or pregnancy.

The charity Deafax says Deaf people's lives are being put at "extreme risk" when it comes to sex education because their communication needs are not being addressed.

A survey for the charity's Education & Advice on Relationships & Sex  (Ears) campaign found 35% of Deaf people received no sex education at all while at school. Everyone else surveyed – 65% of respondents – said that what information they did get was inaccessible. Deaf Gerbils 'Hear Again' After Stem Cell Cure

Media Video: Deaf gerbils 'hear again' after stem cell cure.

Health and science reporter, BBC News

UK researchers say they have taken a huge step forward in treating deafness after stem cells were used to restore hearing in animals for the first time.

Hearing partially improved when nerves in the ear, which pass sounds into the brain, were rebuilt in gerbils - a UK study in the journal Nature reports.

Getting the same improvement in people would be a shift from being unable to hear traffic to hearing a conversation.

Video by Beanyman62News

However, treating humans is still a distant prospect. Fergus Walsh reports.

However, in about one in 10 people with profound hearing loss, nerve cells which should pick up the signal are damaged. It is like dropping the baton after the first leg of a relay race...Read more http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-19570024.

GLASGOW, UK - Video with Subtitles - Scottish yachtsman in a bid to become the first deaf person to sail single handed non-stop around the world, Gerry Hughes set sail from Troon Marina at 12.00pm on Saturday 1st September 2012.

A Scottish teacher who was born profoundly deaf is aiming to be the first deaf person to sail single-handed, non-stop around the world past all five capes – a journey made famous by the likes of Sir Francis Chichester and the legendary Sir Robin Knox Johnston.

This undertaking, being a landmark in the achievements of this incredible adventurer will also serve as beacon to the Deaf community and any of the many individuals who look to Gerry as a role model. Crowds gathered to witness this momentous and historic occasion. Helen Moonie, Lord Provost of South Ayrshire was there in person to give her personal greetings and stepped on board the yacht to wish Gerry well and is looking forward to welcoming him back to Troon shores. Scottish production companies AC2.com Productions Ltd and Incorporated Media have joined forces to document this historic attempt and with footage shot by Gerry himself will create an intimate, emotional and inspiring record of his incredible journey. SWNS was also there to capture the story in pictures for the National Press. You can follow Gerry's progress on the site via updates from Gerry as and when they are received. London Paralympic Opening Ceremony 2012

Video in CC (english transcilbed) Highlights from the opening ceremony of the London 2012 Paralympic Games.

It was billed as an 'exquisite journey of discovery' and last night's Paralympic Opening Ceremony called Enlightenment, certainly lived up to its hype.

The show may have only had a fraction of the funding given to the Opening Ceremony of the Games a few weeks earlier, but the message behind the title was clear as a host of deaf and disabled artists, local children and performers all featured in the show-stopping event.

The roars of the crowd as paralympic athletes from across the world graced the stadium showed the nation's pleasure that the competition has returned to its 1948 birthplace. Video source Channel4News

Deaf Viewers Outraged By Bizarre Subtitles On The U.K. TV

Deaf viewers outraged by bizarre subtitles on the U.K. television.

LONDON, U.K. - 'Pulled your ball up!' Deaf viewers outraged by bizarre subtitles on Dancing On Ice. The National Deaf Children's Society has slammed ITV for its 'bizarre and confusing' captioning on the hit celebrity figure skating contest.

The programme has attracted an audience of more than 7 million but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical wording claiming 'blasphemous' routines 'walk straight in the fridge'. Leading campaigners who want a good quality of life for Deaf adults and children said incoherent subtitles makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers... Error captioning on television, which is not the first time the United Kingdom television media network has done it in the national broadcast.

The BBC came under fire last October from groups for the hard of hearing for its increasing number of bizarre gaffes, which have included calling the Labour leader 'Ed Miller Band' and the Church of England leader the 'arch bitch' of Canterbury.

The BBC has been criticized by Deaf campaign groups over "ludicrous" computer-generated subtitles that branded the Labor leader "Ed Miller Band" and announced a visit by the "Arch b**** of Canterbury".

Hard-of-Hearing viewers have been left "utterly perplexed" over a string of bizarre errors in subtitles during BBC programming, including the Ireland rugby team last week being renamed "Island"...
