Support for Deaf Children: Teacher of the Deaf
Stolen Futures Petition
LONDON - Stolen Futures petition. As this e-petition has received more than 10,000 signatures, the relevant Government department have provided the following response.
As the National Deaf Children’s Society acknowledge in its ‘Stolen Futures’ report, the Department for Education has already taken action to protect the resources available for special educational needs (SEN) provision, including support for Deaf Children. We have ensured that the Dedicated Schools Grant is, overall, at the same cash level per pupil as in 2010-11. We have also announced that we will not seek to recover SEN funding from local authorities where schools have converted to Academy status. This should help protect services on the ground at a time of transition and emphasises our commitment to improving the system of support for disabled children and those with SEN.
Government, at both national and local level, is having to make tough choices given the current financial environment. Those decisions, however, must also be based on a good assessment of local need and well thought through and transparent. Most importantly, families should have clear, accessible information about their rights and the support available to them. This petition has been initiated by the National Deaf Children’s Society.

Please sign the petition to recognize ASL as an official school language. The Obama Administration to officially recognize American Sign Language as a community language and a language of instruction in schools.
For more than a hundred years, American Sign Language (ASL) has been persecuted as a "lesser" language. It is a homegrown and complete language that has survived efforts to wipe it out.
Yet today, ASL is still considered "foreign" and not given the respect and protection it needs. Many states have passed laws allowing credit for ASL classes as a foreign language but they have stopped short of recognizing its benefits as a language of instruction in schools, despite studies proving its benefits for students.
Official federal recognition will finally give ASL the "welcome home" it needs. We need 25,000 by December 12, 2012.

ABC7 Exclusively Interview With Dr. Angela McCaskill
WASHINGTON - (ABC7DC) - Dr. Angela McCaskill speaks out about Gallaudet dust-up. In her first interview since controversy erupted at Gallaudet University, the school’s chief diversity officer who was placed on leave for signing a petition to put Maryland’s same-sex marriage law on the November ballot says she's not anti-gay and feels bullied.
Angela McCaskill sat down exclusively with ABC7’s Mike Conneen at her home in Upper Marlboro to respond to criticism for inking the petition.
“Signing that petition is a right that I have as a citizen of the state of Maryland. It simply means that I want to see this very sensitive issue put on the ballot as a referendum in the state of Maryland,” McCaskill said.
Her attorney, J. Wyndal Gordan, says McCaskill will not express her personal view on the matter. He says she will do that in the voting booth. Gordon says McCaskill “is considering all options, and not ruling out taking legal action,” hoping to get reinstated at Gallaudet... ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Dr. Angela McCaskill speaks out on bullying by Gallaudet University president. So far, the best argument for protecting marriage may be sitting in the President's office of Gallaudet University. There, voters got a unique view of the real-life persecution that awaits anyone who opposes Maryland's same-sex marriage. Last week, when Gallaudet's Dr. Angela McCaskill was outed for signing a Petition in favor of a public vote on marriage, she was exiled from the University she called home for 23 years. Now, instead of sitting in her office helping students, she's meeting with attorneys, trying to come to grips with President T. Alan Hurwitz's decision to banish her from campus. Calling McCaskill's actions "inappropriate," Hurwitz is putting a face on the intolerance that FRC and other marriage advocates have warned about for years.
By all reports, his ruthlessness is already taking its toll. According to her pastor, Rev. Dr. Lee Washington, Dr. McCaskill and her family have been the targets of threats and intimidation ever since the story broke. "As her church family, we stand firmly by her side and welcome all persons of good faith regardless of their ideological views to denounce these actions of cowardice and bullying." Even the The Washington Post warns that Gallaudet's overreaction could seriously "undermine" the effort to redefine marriage. "The surest way to repel voters--and to vitiate the marriage movement's broader goals and values--would be to say, or even seem to say, 'Agree with us or else.'"
Unfortunately, that's always been the underlying, totalitarian message of the homosexual movement. The only difference here is that Maryland voters have been warned: public dissent will not be tolerated. Not surprisingly, liberals are racing to cover up Gallaudet's mess, insisting that they believe in free speech as much as the next guy. Tell that to the wedding cake bakers, the T-shirt makers, the bed and breakfast owners, the military chaplains, the high school teachers, the restaurant owners, the photographers, the churches, the Massachusetts parents, and others who were fired, sued, harassed, fined, and suspended. Like Angela, their biggest crime was having an opinion contrary to the radical Left--something one former FRCer knows a lot about.
When Teresa Wagner left Family Research Council, she had plenty of offers to join university faculties and teach law. A graduate of the University of Iowa, Wagner joined the staff as a part-time associate director of its legal writing program. She also applied to be a full-time teacher at the law school, but her application was mysterious denied. It wasn't for lack of experience, since Teresa was the most qualified candidate. Nor was it for lack of legal expertise, since the person offered the position "had never practiced law, had no legal publications, and had no prior successful teaching experience." It was because of her work in the pro-family movement. As seen on article Lawsuit Pits Political Activism Against Campus Diversity.
Teresa will try to prove as much in federal court, where her appeal kicks off today. Although people have sued for discrimination in hiring decisions, experts say Teresa's case is the first of its kind. Unlike other plaintiffs, she has evidence. Like Angela McCaskill, Teresa Wagner belongs at the University. Until then, both women are giving students a serious education in political bias. Gallaudet Official's Lawyer Speaks About Petition
ANNAPOLIS, MD. - Gallaudet Official's Lawyer Speaks About Petition. An attorney for Gallaudet University's chief diversity officer who has been placed on leave for signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot says she only signed it so the issue could be decided by the democratic process.

Gallaudet Worker: ‘Pro-Democracy,’ Not Anti-Gay.
The Washington Post - Dr. Angela McCaskill addresses a news conference about being put on leave from her job after signing a petition to put Maryland's same-sex marriage law on the ballot for voters to decide. She is asking to be reinstated to her position.
Gallaudet University’s embattled chief diversity officer said she wasn’t taking an anti-gay stance when she signed a Petition advocating for Maryland's same-sex marriage law to be put to a vote. Instead, Angela McCaskill says she was joining 200,000 others in standing up for the rights of voters to make decisions at the ballot box.
“I thought it was important that as a citizen of the state of Maryland I could exercise my right to participate in the political process. I am pro-democracy,” McCaskill explained at a news conference Tuesday in Annapolis, speaking out for the first time since the university’s president placed her on administrative leave last week after it became public that she had signed the petition... Angela McCaskill Placed On Administrative Leave From Gallaudet
WASHINGTON - (ABC7) - The Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at Gallaudet University has been placed on paid administrative leave, after allegedly signing a Maryland referendum petition opposing same sex marriage.
Dr. Angela McCaskill became a Deputy to the President and the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion in January 2011. This afternoon, President Hurwitz released the following statement to students, faculty and staff:
"I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately. It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer; however, other individuals feel differently. I will use the extended time while she is on administrative leave to determine the appropriate next steps taking into consideration the duties of this position at the university. In the meantime an interim Chief Diversity Officer will be announced in the near future."
As first reported in the blog Planet DeafQueer, “a Gallaudet faculty member, who at this time wishes to remain anonymous, noticed Dr. McCaskill’s name, address and signature on the anti-gay marriage petition. Gallaudet University’s chief diversity officer was placed on paid leave on Wednesday after school officials learned that she signed a petition challenging a new same-sex marriage law in Maryland.
Angela McCaskill, who has worked for more than 20 years at the university for the deaf and hard of hearing, was among more than 200,000 Maryland residents to sign a petition seeking a referendum vote on the measure. The petition succeeded, and enactment of the law was put on hold pending the outcome of the referendum in November.

2090 Coalition: Support Rocky Mountain Deaf School.
Support RMDS! Learn more about Rocky Mountain Deaf School needs your support to secure a location for an appropriate building design that would help to meet the educational and safety needs of RMDS students.
The "2090 Coalition (Save Our Park)" is a group of local residents in Lakewood who are petitioning for an election over the building of a new school at 2090 South Wright Street for Rocky Mountain Deaf School (RMDS), a Jeffco Charter School. RMDS wants to move from a strip mall in Golden to this property owned by Jefferson County School District. RMDS can build a 46,000 square-foot new school with an appropriate building design that would help to meet the educational and safety needs of maximum 100 RMDS students. This school would be nationally recognized and the first in the US to be built and designed by the deaf, for the deaf. RMDS must begin building on this property before November or risk losing a $13 million dollar grant from the BEST (Building Excellent Schools Today) program through the Colorado Department of Education. The BEST grant does not use taxpayer dollars - the funding comes primarily from lottery funds.
On June 25, 2012 the city of Lakewood approval the RMDS rezoning request of 2090 South Wright Street so RMDS can purchase the land and build a K-12 school. This land is currently owned by Jefferson County Schools and is zoned for a K-12 school for 300-400 students.
The 2090 Coalition supporters must collect over 3000 Lakewood registered voter signatures by Aug 10. If they succeed, the petition would force the Lakewood city council to revisit the decision. If the council refuses to overturn the rezoning, the issue would go to the voters this fall. The 2090 Coalition is jeopardizing the possibility of a new school for RMDS by delaying the process to the BEST grant deadline.
2090 Coalition petitioners have been seen in several locations spreading incorrect information to gain signatures on the petition which will interfere with the rezoning process of the 2090 South Wright Street property. Their platform is "Save Our Park" and they are telling residents whom they approach that they are "preserving open space". This land had never been open space nor has it ever belonged to the city of Lakewood (something the city's own attorney attests to). The developers zoned it for a school in 1973 and the fortunate residents have been enjoying these 10 acres since then. The proposed school would still benefit the residents and they would still be able to enjoy the adjoining 40 acres that are zoned as open space. Please - we need your support! Help to share the truth about this land and support Rocky Mountain Deaf School.

The Fight For A School's Future
Video: The fight for a school's future in Colorado in captioned.
Rocky Mountain Deaf School is trying to purchase vacant property from a local school district to build a school of its own. But a group of neighbors calling itself 2090 Coalition circulated a petition to force a vote to overturn the property's rezoning, claiming that the land belongs to the city of Lakewood.
The coalition used paid petitioners who were overheard lying to voters about what the petition is about. The coalition itself is also lying to Lakewood citizens by claiming a vote in favor of overturning the rezoning will save "open space." If the rezoning is overturned, the property will NOT remain open space, but will return to K-8 zoning and still belong to Jefferson County Public Schools.
The first portion of this video shows the current facility RMDS is in. The second portion consists of interviews with two RMDS supporters who personally heard and witnessed misconduct by the coalition's paid petitioners.

2090 Coalition: Support Rocky Mountain Deaf School !
Video: 2090 Coalition: Support Rocky Mountain Deaf School in captioned.
Video by FacundoElement
DISCLAIMER: I am NOT an interpreter! I understand that the art of ASL is very complex, and what I do is probably much closer to "Signed English" as opposed to actual ASL. The phrases I sign in these videos are things I tried to mash together from individual words I learned on the internet and from friends, and are probably not very close to the actual ASL phrases. If you would like to start learning ASL, I highly recommend it. I'm trying myself and it's a beautiful language, and there are many good resources out there (myself not included). With that said, I am not trying to disrespect anyone in the process of making these videos, I'm simply trying to have fun with my friends and learn ASL. If you see me signing something incorrectly, PLEASE let me know, and I will try to make a new video. Thanks!
Kristin claimed "I'm learning in ASL" as seen "About Kristin Henson Page". Actually, Kristin Henson is insulting and offensive ASL-users community for misleading signed on the tube in which she is NOT a licensed and certified interpreter or ASL course as well.

Hi, my name is Victoria, I am a culturally Deaf person and use ASL as my primary language of communication. About your dirty signs videos... to begin with, I feel pretty sad about it all.
Don't get me wrong, I have the best sense of humour ever. My Deaf friends and I love getting creative with our signs; but trust me, the shit we come up with trumps yours infinity times. Kristin, what you're doing is IGNORANT. It doesn't help Deaf people at all. We get enough shit already when it comes to paternalism, audism, cultural oppression, phonocentrism, and general ignorance.
You responded to one person's comment on your "bitch, please" video: "Hi there! I noticed you've been commenting on quite a few of my videos that my ASL is wrong. As per the video description, I don't claim to be a licensed interpreter and I'm definitely still learning, but I'm always welcome to corrections. It seems like you're more interested in making general comments that I'm wrong and I shouldn't be making these videos, instead of actually helping me fix my signs, so I'm going to block you now. Sorry for the offense, and I wish you all the best!"
Video by citizenvee
How patronizing, you need to check your hearing privilege. Acknowledging your incredible shortcomings does not make what you're doing at all right. You don't seem to be listening to Deaf people at all, so why would anyone of us want to correct your signs? you use our language the language of an oppressed minority as a way of perpetuating racism, sexism and audism. I am a Deaf woman, do you really think I will want to carry on a conversation with a hearing person who thinks it's funny to learn signs like: "fucking you is like throwing a hotdog down a hallway" or even more galling "less talk, more anal."? Disgusting!
What the hell? even today, we are STILL fighting for the right to use our language. ANY public use of sign language is fraught with deeply political messages. When I use American Sign Language in public, amongst hearing people, it is an act of disobedience and resistance against "The Man". You're not doing shit to help Deaf people in this regard. You're only making a joke of ASL, and reducing it to signs that befit the paternalistic view of Deaf people as objects to be manipulated.
As my friend Elena commented on the dailydot article about your videos, "but language is never removed from cultural politics, especially if you go on to commodify it. Quite frankly, you're doing it wrong. Wrong wrong wrong. you're teetering the line of contributing to the cultural-linguistic appropriation of ASL and consequently U.S. Deaf culture as a whole."
There is a difference between "cultural appropriation" and "cultural exchange." What you are doing is not cultural exchange. If it were, you'd have amongst other things captioned your videos to make them accessible to Deaf people. Also, your disclaimer says, "I am not trying to disrespect anyone in the process of making these videos, I'm simply trying to have fun with my friends and learn ASL." If it was just with your friends, why put it all on the internet if not as an attention-seeking manoevre? you are simply exploiting Deaf people and Deaf culture for internet popularity. And now that St. Martin's is intending to publish your smutty signs book, you are also exploiting us for financial gain. that's awful!
The best way to learn ASL, Kristin, is to participate in the Deaf community and make Deaf friends. Stop posting unfunny and offensive shit on the internet and have real conversations with Deaf people. ASL is so much more than a badly executed "twat waffle" and the internet needs to know that, too.
Just stop. Don't be just another hearing person denying Deaf people their voice.

'What It's Like To Be Deaf ?'
Video: 'What It's Like To Be Deaf' in American Sign Language version.
This is Katie describing what it's like to be Deaf. For those who cannot understand her sign language, this is what she is saying...
'What It's Like To Be Deaf ?'
People have asked me. I have no problem answering or explaining how I lost my hearing. But to explain what it's like to be Deaf? It's very Simple: I can't hear. No, wait... it is much more than that. It is similar to a goldfish in a bowl, always observing things going on. People talking all the... times. It is like a man on his own island among foreigners.
Isolation is no stranger to me. Relatives and friends say hi and bye, but I sit among them for 5 hours trying to be involved. Natural curiosity perks up upon seeing great laughter, crying, anger.
Inquiring only to meet with a "Never mind", "Nothing" or "Oh, it's not important". Seeing them laugh and look at me makes me think they are making fun of my disability when they weren't.
Video by KatieFigurestar98
Getting a summarized statement of the whole day. I'm supposed to smile to show happiness. Little do they know how truly miserable I am trying to understand. People are in control of language usage, I am at loss and really uncomfortable there. Always feeling like an outsider among the hearing people, Even though it was not their intention. They are always assuming that I am part of them by my physical presence, but not understanding the importance of communication. I must make the choices constantly, no wonder why I choose Deaf friends? I get such great pleasure at the Deaf events, before I even realize it, it is already the end of the day. Our language is common, we understand each other clearly.
Being at loss of control of the environment which is communication we rely on such technology such as smartphones to communicate with hearing people, and yet some people panic and retreat to avoid Deaf people like the plague.
But again we Deaf people are still human beings With dreams, desires, and goals sometimes we just feel the need to Belong, just like everyone else. That's how I am Deaf.
