University of North Carolina Sexual Assault Scandal Raises Questions About Colleges' Policies

University of North Carolina Sexual Assault Scandal Raises Questions About Colleges' PoliciesUniversity of North Carolina Sexual Assault Scandal Raises Questions About Colleges' Policies - Although research suggests that a quarter of college women will become the victims of sexual violence during the course of their education, very few cases actually make it to law enforcement's attention. The federal government's announcement this week that it will investigate complaints that a North Carolina university mishandled complaints of campus-based sexual assaults may be a sign that the traditional culture of silence surrounding rape on campus may be showing cracks.

USA Today reports that the U.S. Education Department will investigate a discrimination complaint charging that the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill failed to respond properly to sexual assault cases on its campus. A letter from the Department's Office for Civil Rights notes that the decision to investigate "in no way implies that OCR has made a determination with regards to the merits of the complaint." The university says it will cooperate fully with the investigation.

According to The Huffington Post, five women filed the complaint in January, stating that UNC fails to provide assault victims with adequate resources or impartial hearings and investigations. They also claim the university pressured plaintiff and former Assistant Dean of Students Melinda Manning to underreport campus-based sexual violence cases. UNC has denied Manning's allegations and hired a consultant and former prosecutor to help reform its sexual assault reporting policies.

Another woman named in the complaint is Landen Gambill, the UNC sophomore who, according to The Washington Post, made national headlines last week after the institution threatened to expel her for "intimidating" her alleged rapist. Gambill reported her rape to the UNC Honor Court last spring, but the court questioned its merit because she did not immediately leave her boyfriend and because she was clinically depressed -- a point Gambill said was directly related to her abusive relationship. After the court dismissed her case, Gambill went public with her story, which led to the university charging her with an honor code violation. The incident inspired days of student demonstrations and, ultimately, the federal complaint.

College rape -- and the underreporting of it -- is a growing problem in the United States. According to The Washington Post, the University of Montana was recently investigated for allegedly failing to protect sexual assault victims, and Princeton University has come under fire for not publishing a survey that indicated nearly one-third of its female students had been assaulted in some way. A 2010 report from the Department of Justice found that one in four college women will be victims of rape before they graduate, and campuses with more than 6,000 students "average one rape per day during the school year." Yet fewer than five percent of these cases are reported to law enforcement by colleges.

That may be changing. Yesterday President Obama signed the Violence Against Women Act into law. The Washington Post reports that the act includes a new piece of legislation called the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act, which requires colleges to report all cases of dating violence, sexual assault or stalking in their annual crime statistics. Institutions are also required to provide victims with awareness programs and support services. Whether the new law will impact how colleges investigate and report sexual violence cases on their campuses remains to be seen.

How The Institutions Of Higher Education (Idea Production and Peer)

How The Institutions Of Higher Education (Idea Production and Peer)
How The Institutions Of Higher Education (Idea Production and Peer) - I'm disappointed by how many mainstream theories are incomplete or uni-dimensional. Admittedly this is how they. But ideas are supposed to combine. Thats the purpose of higher education & the culture of ideas? if not that? then what???

Why does this take place?
1. Tradition and history and doing whats always been done. Institutional bureaucracy.
2. Institutional bureaucracy. What it takes to get published.
How could this change? Changing the nature of peer reviewed work & peer reviewed journals?actually mostly the articles themselves:
1) Systems analysis & analytic thinking
2) Multi-dimensional analysis/Cross disciplinary
3) Integrative analysis
4) Better feedback loops on the initial models (perhaps even semi-transparent?aka on the document itself)
5) Better ranking or filtering of existing models (promote the ones that work & have utilitarian value)
6) Visualization (going beyond just words)
7) Develop systems of systems which are themselves labeled & named systems.

If you boil this list down:
1) Systems (including analysis)
2) Multiple: Perspectives/Modes of Thought/Realms of Thought
3) Visualization
4) Feedback loops & ranking/filtering

(Somewhere between the list of 7 and the list of 4 there is a happy medium)

Its astounding that the most innovative place on the planet should be universities?and that they?ve used basically the same functional model of article for the last 100 years with very few changes. And those changes that are created individually?aren?t scaled.

I don?t think there is any comprehensive analysis of the tropes of articles or the effective practices of articles?..I may be wrong?..in fact very wrong. I kind of hope I am.

Technology Helps Deaf Students at Gallaudet

VIDEO: Technology Helps Deaf Students at Gallaudet University. (Captioned)

VOA - Gallaudet University in Washington is the world's only university with programs designed for Deaf students and those who are hard-of-hearing. But hearing disorders do not keep students from learning because of the university's heavy use of technology.

Students use interactive technologies in and out of the classroom, technologies such as webcam interactions on Skype. More than 90 percent of Gallaudet's classes use some form of online communication. Professor Gene Mirus says technology is important in the learning process. "So there are, you know, televisions and webcams and things like that. Students are able to record themselves doing projects in sign language, and do that at home. We use a lot of computer technologies, and webcams and things like that."

Video by VOALearningEnglish

Sonam Jain, a student from Sri Lanka, says his years at Gallaudet have offered experiences different from his childhood. "Sri Lanka has states. And they don't have one standardized sign language. So, in the United States, for example, there are signs for almost everything that you would ever want to talk about.

In Sri Lanka, there isn't. And so there are many things you find it very difficult to talk about in Sri Lanka." Another student says Gallaudet has helped him with his communication skills, especially with ASL - American Sign Language.

"When I grew up, I was signing in a way that was more English-like. Here at Gallaudet, I sign more like I sign in ASL - more visual and the communication is much easier, and the social life is wonderful here." That increased ability to communicate helps many students. "A lot of networking and reaching out to people and I've learned from - I've had role models that I've learned from here.

They provide workshops, there are a lot of sporting activities, intramural events that I've been involved with." "Most students increase their self-confidence, and improve their communication abilities and they leave Gallaudet ready to face the world." I'm Jeri Watson.

Detail Overview Duke University 2013

Detail Overview Duke University 2013Detail Overview Duke University 2013 - Duke University was created in 1924 by James Buchanan Duke as a memorial to his father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family who built a worldwide financial empire in the manufacture of tobacco products and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, had long been interested in Trinity College. Trinity traced its roots to 1838 in nearby Randolph County when local Methodist and Quaker communities opened Union Institute. The school, then named Trinity College, moved to Durham in 1892. In December 1924, the provisions of James B. Duke's indenture created the family philanthropic foundation, The Duke Endowment, which provided for the expansion of Trinity College into Duke University.
As a result of the Duke gift, Trinity underwent both physical and academic expansion. The original Durham campus became known as East Campus when it was rebuilt in stately Georgian architecture. West Campus, Gothic in style and dominated by the soaring 210-foot tower of Duke Chapel, opened in 1930. East Campus served as home of the Woman's College of Duke University until 1972, when the men's and women's undergraduate colleges merged. Both men and women undergraduates now enroll in either the Trinity College of Arts & Sciences or the Pratt School of Engineering. In 1995, East Campus became the home for all first-year students.

Detail Overview Princeton University 2013

Detail Overview Princeton University 2013Detail Overview Princeton University 2013 - Chartered in 1746 as the College of New Jersey — the name by which it was known for 150 years — Princeton University was British North America’s fourth college. Located in Elizabeth for one year and then in Newark for nine, the College of New Jersey moved to Princeton in 1756. It was housed in Nassau Hall, which was newly built on land donated by Nathaniel FitzRandolph (see A Princeton Timeline). Nassau Hall contained the entire College for nearly half a century. In 1896, when expanded program offerings brought the College university status, the College of New Jersey was officially renamed Princeton University in honor of its host community of Princeton. Four years later, in 1900, the Graduate School was established.

Fully coeducational since 1969, Princeton for the past academic year (2011-12) enrolled 7,757 students — 5,173 undergraduates (730 of whom are New Jersey residents, representing almost every county in the state) and 2,584 graduate students (degree candidates only). The ratio of undergraduate students to faculty members (in full-time equivalents) is 6 to 1.

The University provides its students with academic, extracurricular and other resources — in a residential community committed to diversity in its student body, faculty and staff — that prepare them for positions of leadership and lives of service in many fields of human endeavor.

Living up to its unofficial motto, “In the Nation’s Service and in the Service of All Nations,” Princeton University has educated thousands of individuals who have dedicated their lives to public service, including two U.S. presidents (Woodrow Wilson and James Madison); hundreds of U.S. and state legislators (the House of Representatives, for example, has housed a Princeton alumnus every year since it first met in 1789); and 44 governors, including 11 New Jersey governors.

Each year, more than 2,500 members of the student body, faculty, staff and local alumni volunteer in community service projects throughout the region. Reflecting this public service spirit, the University as an institution supports many service initiatives (see Service and Outreach). Princeton’s Office of Sustainability helps ensure progress in areas where the University has been a leader, such as energy conservation (see Sustainability).

As a research university, Princeton seeks to achieve the highest levels of distinction in the discovery and transmission of knowledge and understanding. At the same time, Princeton is distinctive among research universities in its commitment to undergraduate teaching. Interdisciplinary work is vital to Princeton and is reflected in a full spectrum of academic programs, including such initiatives as the Lewis Center for the Arts, the Center for African American Studies and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute.

Princeton’s main campus in Princeton Borough and Princeton Township consists of approximately 9 million square feet of space in more than 180 buildings on 500 acres. Including Springdale Golf Course, Lake Carnegie and roads for which the University owns the right-of-way, Princeton owns 759 acres in the township and has 214 acres in the borough.

The University, with approximately 5,974 benefits-eligible employees, is one of the region’s largest private employers. It plays a major role in the educational, cultural and economic life of the area by bringing 784,000 visitors and approximately $2 billion in economic activity to the region.

Value of Tuck MBA

Value of Tuck MBAValue of Tuck MBA - Last weekend was weird in North East. A major snow storm was expected. They even gave it a name – Nemo. Many offices in NYC were closed and events cancelled, Massachusetts even administered curfew. Ironically, me and my classmates participated in case competition at Columbia and anyway headed to NYC.
Well, the snowstorm did hit the North-East and NYC in particular, but in my perception was not that bad. I personally was amazed how efficiently streets and highways were cleaned. However, it’s not the snowstorm that became the highlight of the weekend.
Before the competition began, we got to listen to several speakers invited by organizers. When I was sitting and listening to the speeches under the Dome of Low Memorial Library at Columbia University (which is by the way neither low nor a library, but this gorgeous building with marble pillars and statues of great ancient
Greeks and a Roman truly looks and feels like a temple of knowledge) it suddenly hit me that my Tuck MBA is like a ticket to outer space.
I deliberately don’t use the lottery analogy here, as I worked hard to be admitted to a top MBA program and I continue working hard. What I mean by the “ticket to outer space” – starting my Tuck MBA I made a step into a completely different dimension and to a completely new level of perception, the borders and horizons being pushed so far that I don’t see them anymore. To be honest, even when we reach our boldest and most ambitious goals, we get used to our new lifestyle and start taking it for granted. But there are moments when you pause and realize where you are, like ascending a mountain you would stop to catch your breath, look around and suddenly realize that you’re far above the ground you usually walk and what a gorgeous view opens from that point.
This idea hit me during the conference and just blew my mind. Two years ago I could not even dream about it, but last Friday I had an opportunity to listen (and ask questions!) to CEO of Becton Dickinson – one of the global leaders in development and manufacturing of medical devices and instruments; get story telling tips from Ogilvy PR Global CEO (who used to work as managing director for Wall Street Journal and VP of CNBC); and participate in discussion with Ernst & Young CEO. Apart from this, I met smart and ambitious people from other business school, pursuing similar goals in life. But the most amazing fact is that now I look at business problems differently, from a different angle and at a different level. And given a fair amount of information about company and industry I am capable of performing a comprehensive analysis and mapping out a strategy. Of course, in real life problem solving is more complex and takes much longer, yet in six months in an MBA program I made light years of personal and professional progress; it is pretty amazing and totally worth it.

Student Loan Debt Could Cripple Economy For Decades

Student Loan Debt Could Cripple Economy For DecadesStudent Loan Debt Could Cripple Economy For Decades - The price of a college education has been climbing at a substantially higher rate than inflation for years; meanwhile, the value of a college degree has been falling. That’s why thousands of debt-laden college graduates are facing the worst economic bust to plague the United States since the housing bubble burst.

A recent report from the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, entitled “Why Are Recent College Graduates Underemployed?”, refutes the oft-repeated theory that college educated Americans have the potential to earn substantially higher lifetime incomes than their uneducated peers. In fact, the report indicates that many college-educated Americans are woefully underemployed because “the growth of supply of college-educated labor is
exceeding the growth in the demand for such labor in the labor market.”

From the report:
  • About 48 percent of employed U.S. college graduates are in jobs that the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) suggests requires less than a four-year college education. Eleven percent of employed college graduates are in occupations requiring more than a high-school diploma but less than a bachelor’s, and 37 percent are in occupations requiring no more than a high-school diploma;
  • The proportion of overeducated workers in occupations appears to have grown substantially; in 1970, fewer than one percent of taxi drivers and two percent of firefighters had college degrees, while now more than 15 percent do in both jobs;
  • About five million college graduates are in jobs the BLS says require less than a high-school education;
  • Comparing average college and high-school earnings is highly misleading as a guide for vocational success, given high college-dropout rates and the fact that overproduction of college graduates lowers recent graduate earnings relative to those graduating earlier;
  • Not all colleges are equal: Typical graduates of elite private schools make more than graduates of flagship state universities, but those graduates do much better than those attending relatively non-selective institutions;
  • Not all majors are equal: Engineering and economics graduates, for example, typically earn almost double what social work and education graduates receive by mid-career;
  • Past and projected future growth in college enrollments and the number of graduates exceeds the actual or projected growth in high-skilled jobs, explaining the development of the underemployment problem and its probable worsening in future years;
  • Rising college costs and perceived declines in economic benefits may well lead to declining enrollments and market share for traditional schools and the development of new methods of certifying occupation competence.
Meanwhile, over the past five years the average amount of student loan debt accrued by college students has risen by 30 percent to $23,829. More than half of student loan holders have currently deferred student loan payments, which is only a temporary solution for struggling degree holders.
Some economists expect the American economy to struggle for decades under massive student loan debts because student loans are almost impossible to discharge in bankruptcy and the government will collect by garnishing the paychecks and tax refunds of those who fail to pay. Furthermore, being underwater on student loans can harm a person’s credit score, making it more expensive for them to get loans for homes or vehicles.
As more and more Americans struggle to pay back student loans while underemployed, the economy as a whole will suffer, since the purchases of first homes and other durable goods are put off indefinitely.

Where are Best Schools for Veterans?

Where are Best Schools for Veterans?Where are Best Schools for Veterans? - Sadly, there is no school that's exclusively for veterans only. A school for veterans just doesn't exist. I'm currently in class now as well as in my class you will find about 29 of us. three of us are veterans. Immediately I felt some kind of bond or connection with them considering that they have seasoned the army the same as I have.

Even in undergrad after i was acquiring my Bachelor's diploma, discovering someone that was a veteran was far and couple of in between. Simply since no one just went around on a loud speaker saying "I AM A VETERAN"!

Which means you never know who's a veteran going for walks around campus till you discuss with them they usually say items which can be distinct in your navy department.

As an illustration, I had been in the U.S. Navy, therefore if I commence a discussion with an individual plus they say terms like "shipmate" and "head", I know that they are clean out of the Navy. In fact that would be awesome if there was a school for veterans! It will be just like currently being while in the navy together with the whole camaraderie and all.

Although not getting a school for veterans is considerably an excellent point. I am going into a community university and i obtain the likelihood to fulfill so many folks!

Similar to while in the armed forces.

Despite the fact that a school for veterans does not exist, a veteran can head to any university that may settle for the GI Invoice.

And have faith in me, which is nearly every single university simply because meaning they're obtaining your tuition Assured through the armed forces.

No person, and that i indicate No one is going to move up guaranteed money, not even educational institutions! Opposite to popular belief, faculties are in enterprise to make cash.

Since I think over it, if somebody commenced a school for veterans, they might make money each and every semester.......assured! Any person need to think of doing that......

But don't allow not have a university particularly for veterans deter you from heading to highschool. I am going and that i get E-5 BAH each and every month which i go! And that's on top of them paying out my tuition and giving me a e-book stipend.

Now they will not spend you on holidays, or throughout breaks, like spring break or fall breaks. Mostly any split among courses you will not receives a commission.

Which sucks since I had been receiving accustomed to obtaining E-5 BAH just for likely to school right up until I spotted I had been heading to have significantly less than 50 percent of that in the months of December and January.

Less than 50 % I explain to ya!

I have a family to feed and my partner and that i each go to school entire time and acquire GI rewards. So most of us endure financially throughout these breaks.........which compelled me to discover a dietary supplement similar to this website.

Do not depend entirely on the government. If you're one you can make it. But when you do have a household, search for locating a dietary supplement to your income for the duration of those breaks like I have with different streams of cash flow similar to this site.

It is possible to supplement your earnings using a website way too, if you would like, to be able to get required revenue flowing into your own home.

So let's wrap this up........ A school for veterans does not exist, but definitely go to faculty to obtain that diploma and have that money!

Acquiring paid out to visit faculty! You cannot defeat that by using a stick!

And whilst you are at it, health supplement that income in the course of those dry months by obtaining an extra stream of income........like blogging!

That is what I did!

Critical Interrogation of Karl White's Speech

Video: Critical Interrogation of Karl White's speech at TEDxUSU. (December 2012)

A Critical Interrogation of Karl White's presentation at TEDxUSU: Establishing a sound foundation for children who are deaf or hard of hearing as seen on http://youtu.be/bfN1RPVuzl0.

Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.

As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.

We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.

Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).
