‘Switched at Birth’: ABC Family’s The teen soap Switched at Birth explores self-expression and the communication gulf between the hearing and Deaf communities.
Melody gives an impassioned lecture about how it’s not about hearing loss, it’s about Deaf gain, of a language, a community, and a culture.
When Marlee Matlin walked away with an Academy Award for her heart-wrenching turn as a Deaf custodian in 1986’s romantic drama Children of a Lesser God, it seemed as though film had finally encountered a definitive depiction of a Deaf individual and the often tenuous relationship between the hearing and the Deaf worlds. Television has lagged behind; nearly 30 years later, most TV shows still typically shove Deaf characters into the background or use them as props as part of a hearing person’s story.
A deft and intelligent take on the way in which we form our identities through self-expression, whether that be street art, spoken/signed communication, texting, or open dialogue among family members and individuals, as well as the communication gulf between the hearing and deaf/hard-of-hearing communities. It’s also a show that doesn’t pander to its presumed audience. Semantics “Deaf” and “hard-of-hearing” are OK; “hearing-impaired” is not and ethical implications, as well as morality and choice, are discussed frankly and without preaching. ... visit: https://www.facebook.com/SwitchedatBirth

WJLA - Gallaudet University marks 25th anniversary of 'Deaf President Now' protests.
WASHINGTON - Gallaudet University is marking the 25th anniversary of the “Deaf President Now” protests. The grassroots effort was launched by students in 1988, generating national and international headlines and resulting in the university’s first Deaf president.
When the Board of Trustees selected the only hearing candidate as Gallaudet University’s next president 25 years ago, students organized a week of protests, chanting “Deaf president now.”
“I can remember when we were looking for a Deaf president I actually made a comment that I hope we see a Deaf president in my lifetime. So I think that gives you an example of how far away it seemed to me,” says Fred Weiner.
Since 1988, three Deaf men have served as president of the university. This week, they gathered to reflect on the so-called DPN movement’s anniversary.
“Expectations were very high, very, very high,” says Dr. I. King Jordan, Gallaudet’s first Deaf president. “But there were also expectations that I couldn’t succeed.

LOS ANGELES (LATIMES) - Dr. William F. House dies at 89; championed cochlear implant. Dr. William F. House also developed a successful surgery for an ear disease that had prevented astronaut Alan Shepard from returning to space.
Dr. William F. House, a dentist turned ear specialist who 50 years ago defied the medical establishment and many advocates for the hearing impaired to champion an implantable device, now widely accepted, that made everyday sounds audible to the profoundly deaf, has died. He was 89.
An innovator who seemed to relish bucking convention, House was responsible for a number of major medical advances, helping to pioneer microsurgery techniques and a new approach to removing acoustic tumors. He also developed a successful surgery for an ear disease that had prevented astronaut Alan Shepard from returning to space.
But House was best known for his early and vigorous advocacy of the cochlear implant, an electronic device that stimulated the auditory nerve and helped the user recognize sounds.
He began to develop the device in the late 1950s after hearing of successful experiments by two European scientists. After publishing his initial results in 1961, he encountered heavy criticism from physicians who said the device was crude and could damage the ear. Representatives of the Deaf community also were opposed, arguing that Deaf people did not need to hear to be considered normal.
But House persevered and in 1984, 25 years after he first implanted a device in a patient, won crucial validation. That year the Food and Drug Administration approved the House cochlear implant for use in Deaf adults, calling it the first device to replace a human sense organ.
Dr. House is called "the Father of Neurotology" - the treatment of inner ear disorders. His surgical treatment for Meniere's disease enabled astronaut Alan Shepard to fly to the moon. His great achievement was the first cochlear implant, allowing the deaf to hear. "Dr. House ... has developed more new concepts in otology than almost any other single person in history..." [American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery Foundation 1995 Distinguished Award for Contributions in Clinical Otology]
Dr. House's book is The Struggles of a Medical Innovator - Cochlear Implants and Other Ear Surgeries.

LONDON (The Guardian) - Communication barriers in sex education put Deaf people at risk.
A lack of resources in sex education for young, Deaf people is leaving many without the knowledge or skills to keep safe and recognise healthy sexual relationships.
There is a telling moment in a documentary called Snapshot: Dicing with Sex when a group of young Deaf people are shown cards with different words on them. They all instantly recognise the words Facebook, Wii and YouTube, but the words syphilis, genital warts and hepatitis ABC are met with blank expressions.
Broadcast in sign language on digital TV in 2010, the documentary revealed a remarkably uninformed attitude to sex, with several young Deaf people saying they preferred not to use condoms, despite experiencing sexually transmitted infection (STIs) or pregnancy.
The charity Deafax says Deaf people's lives are being put at "extreme risk" when it comes to sex education because their communication needs are not being addressed.

Whether you are hearing or Deaf, it is recommended to watch this film with subtitles. There is spoken content which Deaf people will struggle to understand without subtitles, and there is British Sign Language which many hearing people will not understand.
This film was written and made with Deaf and hearing people in mind, and the film-makers really wanted to make a crossover film from the perspective of Deaf people and Deaf culture.
Ted Evans (Writer/Director) and the team behind The End quite rightly want the film to be accessible for everyone - However watching the film without subtitles would prove to be very difficult.
We are therefore currently only showing this film with subtitles.

DENVER, CO. (KMGH ABC 7 NEWS) - Colorado film, 'Spirit of Love,' highlights Deaf community and life of NBA star, Mike Glenn. 'Spirit of Love: The Mike "Stinger" Glenn Story' takes basketball legend's story to big screen. The film will be presented with sign-language and captioning for all audiences. Anne Trujillo reports.
The recreation center in the heart of Denver's Swansea-Eylria neighborhood is busy for the fourth day of filming.
"Action! Rolling camera A," yells a young woman wearing headphones.
There are teens everywhere. Some are operating cameras and computers. Some are making their film debuts as young actors. There's even a retired NBA player in the mix.
All are under the careful direction of Colorado film producer Darla Rae.
"Make sure you keep your energy up. I need to feel the excitement in your voices," said Rae to the group of boys practicing their lines standing next to retired NBA player, Mike "Stinger" Glenn.
For nearly two weeks various locations in Denver have been transformed into scenes to replicate rural Georgia and locations where Glenn grew up.
"It's a feature film based on the story of how I established the nation's first basketball camp for the Deaf and hard of hearing," said Glenn.
Rae argues it's that and so much more. She says the film is named "Spirit of Love" after an award with the same name that Glenn received from the NBA Players Association honoring him for the positive impact he's had on Deaf communities across the country.

Video in CC (english transcilbed) - "Social progress can be measured by the social positions of the female sex" The global war we are fighting against the Islamic Jihad is not just about bombs and hijacked airliners. It's also about the oppression of women.
It is an utter disgrace that more people the world over - including and especially human rights and women's organizations - are not speaking out loudly against the hideous, violent treatment of women within Islam. This abuse has been going on for centuries, and little has changed over the past decades since the non-Muslim world began to take notice of Islam. In fact, Muslim apologists - including non-Muslim defenders - are very vocal in denying that women are abused and oppressed within Islam, an assertion that is patently false and mendacious. All of the apologies and apologetics in the world will not make these facts of violence against women go away, and day in and day out women and girls are treated abysmally in the Muslim world, simply because of their female gender - and because the wanton abuse of women is endorsed by the Islamic holy book, the Quran/Koran, as well as various commentaries thereon, such as the Hadiths, to the evident exultation of misogynists worldwide.
