A teenager has dodged a jail term after pleading guilty to bashing a Deaf man at a Perth train station, but he will face imprisonment if he offends again in the next year, a judge has warned.
Joshua William Bignell, 18, bashed Seow Oh, 28, fracturing his eye socket, in the eastern Perth suburb of Carlisle in June last year.
Bignell bashed and kicked Mr Oh from behind as he was walking to his car parked at the station. Bignell was originally charged with assault occasioning bodily harm but the charge was later upgraded to grievous bodily harm.
On Monday, in the District Court of Western Australia Judge Phillip Eaton handed Bignell a pre-sentence order, subject to three reviews over the next 12 months. Judge Eaton decided not to imprison Bignell immediately because he was young, had a troubled childhood and mental health problems and was "now in a stable situation".
If Bignell committed an offence in the next 12 months, it was likely he'd be sentenced to an immediate term of imprisonment, Judge Eaton warned. "You can just about bank on that," he said.

"If you're going well, I'll allow the order to continue. "If things are falling apart, then I won't hesitate to bring it to an end. "If you fail, Mr Bignell, then the consequences will be grim."

Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.
As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.
We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.
Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).

Chelesa Lately TV Show Under Fire For Mocks Sign Language
LOS ANGELES - Chelesa Lately TV show under fire for mocks sign language.
Late-night host Chelsea Handler (of the Chelsea Lately Show, on E! Network) has found herself in the center of controversy, due to this skit (air date: Oct 30, 2012) which many members of the ASL-users community say mocks and makes fun of the language they use to communicate: ASL (American Sign Language). In the skit, a member of the cast mocks Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ASL Interpreter Lydia Callis, who translated for the Mayor's Hurricane Sandy press conferences, as seen on YouTube video.
Many people unfamiliar with ASL and the plight of the Oralism and Hard of Hearing don't realize that facial expressions and body movements are a part of ASL, and hence it is a protected activity, with communication considered a 'major life activity' under the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).

And what some with hearing (like Chelsea) would consider as "over-exaggerated" facial expressions and body movements are used for a good reason, not to "editorialize" or to be "passionate", but to communicate linguistic elements that those with hearing convey by way of vocal inflection, pitch, rhythm, pace, etc, and take for granted.
America’s largest Deaf organisation, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has written an open letter to the producers of a comedy show accusing them of “mocking” American Sign Language. Even, Deaf advocacy organization, Deaf Nation, released a letter the group sent to Handler.

If they need to have a Judge lecture them on the basics of the principle of "fair use" exceptions allowed under U.S. Federal Copyright law, then they can be my guest.
On the other hand, I'm willing to consider relinquishing my right to this "fair use" (public commentary) if the "Chelsea Lately Show" offers a public apology for whatever insult and harm they have caused, perhaps with a statement educating their viewers as to why ASL interpreters must use non-gestural components as a part of ASL, to be broadcast on the Chelsey Lately show in an opening monologue, with a message that is deemed acceptable by representatives of the Deaf community (eg Deaf Nation).

Discussing my thoughts on issues surrounding TV Show - Chelesa Lately's skit on Hurricane Sandy's Breakout Star: Lydia Callis, NY Mayor Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter. Making fun of American Sign Language (ASL) in national spotlight is definitely lame and politically-incorrect despite unexpected and pricesless promotion of our beloved and respectful language recently. An interpreter's main role is to convey information rather than become a celebrity for the ignorant. Deaf people are aware of such mainstream fasincation with interpreters and our "beautiful" language. So I bring up the question that is OK to laugh at or laugh with and basically shrug this off? I think this whole publicity stunt is a turkey. I forgot to mention in my vlog: What if this was a terrorist attack rather than a weather crisis in NYC? OK to laugh at or with Lydia's national exposure? I think not.

Outlets like NPR are calling her “a star” on the level of El Bloombito, the Spanglish-snark Twitter account that added some levity to Hurricane Irene by making fun of Michael R. Bloomberg’s terrible attempts to speak Spanish.
While most of the comments about Lydia online have been positive, they’re positive in an ironic and subtly mocking sort of way. The title of the Tumblr is “Lydia Callis’ face for NYC mayor” not her whole body, just her face, as seen on YouTube with closed captioned:

NEW YORK - (BlackBookMag) - 'SNL' Opening Skit Puts Sign Language Interpreter Front & Center.You could tell from a mile away that Saturday Night Live was going to use Lydia Callis, Mayor Bloomberg's American Sign Language interpreter, in their opening skit. But was it ... funny?
Callis became an overnight celebrity this week for her animated facial expressions as she interpreted ASL for Michael R. Bloomberg during his many press conferences regarding Hurricane Sandy . But as journalist Lilit Marcus wrote over at the Atlantic, much of the coverage of Callis was patronizing to ASL speakers.
Marcus is the child of two hearing impaired parents and was dismayed, if not entirely surprised, that the hearing world seemed to think Callis was there to provide goofy entertainment.

Oscar winner Marlee Matlin has lashed out at "Saturday Night Live" for poking fun at sign language during the opening skit on Saturday's show.

Deaf Man Bashed For Pizza
MELBOURNE, AU (7NEWS) - In a shocking act of violence, a young man with a hearing impairment has been bashed over a pizza. A Melbourne man says a brutal attack on his hearing-impaired son over a pizza was beyond understanding and the attacker might strike again.
EOIN Murphy, 20, is recovering from his injuries after being assaulted in the inner suburb of Clifton Hill about 6.30pm (AEST) on Sunday, June 3 after picking up a pizza.
Police say he was heading to his local milk bar to buy a drink when an attacker kicked him twice in the stomach. The attacker laughed and fled with the pizza.

Deaf Black Students Beaten By Cops During Stop
BELLEVILLE, NJ (PIX11) - Deaf black students say they were manhandled by police.
The East Coast's Stop and Frisk law allowed New Jersey cops to stop a group of deaf black teenagers and harass them. A group of deaf men, on summer vacation from a Trenton trade school for the hearing-impaired, said they were stopped and manhandled by cops in Belleville, New Jersey Tuesday.
20 year old Isiah Isaac used “sign language” to tell the story to PIX 11 through his mother and brother. “It was six cars that surrounded them,” Isaac’s mother, Frances, said—as she followed his sign language in the family living room. “He said all the cop cars came over and blocked them in.”
17 year old Domonique Isaac—Isiah’s brother—said he was the only one of six, young men in the car who could hear. The driver, he said, was deaf—and got out of the car to fetch his l icense from a bag in the trunk. Isaac said, “The passenger (in the front) tried to get out and explain to the officer that he’s deaf. The driver ended up on the other side of the car and they slammed him in the passenger’s seat. When he slammed him in, that’s when I tried telling him, ‘He’s deaf, he’s deaf.’”

Deaf Video Web Chaotic Situation of Stereotype Examples
Stereotype Examples: Deaf Trash, Deafhood, Beasthood, Orange Group, Blue Group, etc!
Vlog In American Sign Language (ASL), I wanted to share my own opinion and based on my observation of the recent chaotic situation in the deaf video web. I wanted to quote the description of a stereotype. It is a public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotype is always based on any prior assumption by the certain groups or individuals. Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races. So any time if you are grouping races or individuals together. You tend to make a judgment about them without knowing them. This is a classical example of a stereotype. Racial remarks, sexual remarks, and gender remarks are the biggest stereotypes.
So what I see in this DVtv, a deaf social network with the diversities of deaf people all around the world is now focusing on the stereotyping against each others within the deaf communities. "Deafhood", "Beasthood", "Orange Group", "Blue Group", "Deaf Trash", "Low Functions" and the lists goes on were the subject of the deaf stereotypes. That kind of stereotyping approaches in this DVtv should be avoided...Why can't we get along with each others and just be you!!!! Numerous ASL-users community have objected to the video clip on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Carly Stong's 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL-users community. Carly is just bad in signing and her selection of really mocking and ludicrous phrases to "teach" to the public shows a huge disrespect for ASL-users and Deaf people.
Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word', which leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning american sign language for deaf and hearing adults as Carly claimed.
Deaf viewers said incoherent video clip makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what Carly is doing is a classic case of exploitation and wrong message to the hearing people who is learning in ASL. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Carly Stong, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the american sign language community for cheap laughs.

Tacoma, WA. - KIRO TV’s investigative unit has discovered Tacoma police used force to arrest and handcuff an innocent Deaf woman after she called 911 for their help.
She called for police assistance after a guest reportedly attacked her in her own apartment. Deaf since birth, White used a special video-equipped phone, connected to a TV and a Web camera, to call 911. A certified American Sign Language interpreter on the other end verbally relayed White’s pleas for help to a Tacoma police dispatcher.
