Lying on a sound box: Deaf children listen to music.
The National Orchestra of Wales has staged a series of workshops and concerts for Deaf people, many of them children, to explore how it is possible to experience music without being able to hear it fully.
The National Orchestra of Wales has been staging unique workshops and concerts for Deaf people. Radio 4 reporter Andrew Bomford discovers children listening to music in a very physical way and speaks to those behind it. Here he blogs about his emotional day.
I'll admit that I am a bit weepy sometimes. I cried at the end of Les Miserables, so the moment that the Welsh National Orchestra string section got started, and Katherine Mount stood there, signing and singing to her profoundly deaf - but clearly enraptured - ten year old son Ethan, I wasn't surprised to feel myself choking up again. Watch Katherine Mount singing Ethan's Song on YouTube
It was towards the end of a long, joyful, but emotionally draining day with the orchestra and children from The Ysgol Maes Dyfan special school in Barry near Cardiff. Some of them are almost completely deaf and others have serious hearing problems, but the joy and enthusiasm shown by the children in their appreciation of the music they were experiencing was wonderful to see. ... Dailymail.co.uk - Prenatal testing prompts rise in abortions of Deaf babies. Hearing loss can be a curse if it's linked to a revelation as heart-breaking as this.
According to a survey conducted by Delhi's Sir Ganga Ram hospital, a majority of would-be parents would opt for an abortion if knew they are going to have a hearing-impaired child.
The research-based study was conducted for four years - 2005 to 2009 - on at least 51 families with a history of congenital hearing loss.
"Around 93 per cent of the couples expressed high interest in prenatal diagnosis, while 73 per cent considered termination if the foetus was affected," Dr Ishwar C Verma, chairman, department of genetics, Sir Ganga Ram hospital, said.
The result in cases of hearing couples, in whom genetic anomalies were identified, was even more disheartening.
"All of them opted for prenatal diagnosis. On testing, all the foetuses were found to be affected and the hearing parents elected to terminate the pregnancies," Dr Verma said.

LUBBOCK - From an onlooker’s perspective, Anna Burch is like any other 5-year-old. She’s friendly, energized and quite interactive. But if you call her name, she won’t respond. She’s not being rude. She simply can’t hear you.
Amy Burch is a single mother of three adopted girls Amelia, 8; Lucy, 3; and Anna, 5. Burch adopted Anna from Anyang, China, just a few weeks before her fifth birthday with the help of her parents. Debra Burch, Amy’s mother, said she and her husband Mike were with her daughter when she made the decision to adopt Anna. “We knew she was Deaf,” said Debra.
The disability didn’t hinder the family’s excitement to adopt her and figured Anna’s deafness could be treated with a hearing aid or cochlear implant. The extent of Anna’s condition was unknown until the family had her hearing assessed.
Anna was profoundly Deaf. Debra said cochlear implants and hearing aids would be of no use, so the family began looking into other options. She was taken to Hall for an assessment in August.
“Anna is such an amazing little girl,” Hall said. “She has no formal language of communication, but she is such a communicative little girl. … I saw her for an assessment in 2012. She was communicating, but it wasn’t through words. With the help of the family, she learned sign communication.”
If you travel consider which company you use. Your dreams could be destroyed. Some of you may be considering a Cochlear Implant for yourself or a child. Video: Audism at Gallaudet University in American Sign Language.
Out of the entire world, within the walls of Gallaudet University Deaf Space. Profound Audism occurred. SimComm destroys both ASL and English. Audism also destroys respect for Deaf people and their Deaf World especially at Gallaudet University.
I experienced profound Audism in Gallaudet University out of all places in the world. A place where the environment is safe for all Deaf people. This intrusion of SimComm and voicing is very irritating. I was not even angry at all at first. I wanted to give positive exposure to the fact it's not a good manner and that it is very disrespectful to Deaf people in general when hearing people SimComm, talking with the voice, using cell phones, etc.
I was hoping for dialogue and discussion to bring better understanding, respect and knowledge, but instead, this hearing student who claim to be a Coda got up and yelled at me with such profound venom, disrespect and hate. Such display of profound oppression has left me shocked and loss of words and thoughts. It even affected my friends at the table.
What hurts me more is that there are other Deaf people there who agreed with me, but sat and did nothing to stand up against Audism. I was even more shocked with the level of apathy. Are we so oppressed and thinking it's so difficult to fight it and we give up and just succumb to it?
I need your help to put an end to Audism from hearing students and put an end to apathy of Deaf people or their lack of courage to stand up for ASL and Deaf World.
My vlog is not an attempt to degrade or belittle other people most especially the hearing group/Coda I was referring about. My point was to bring this up to discussion and to raise awareness of Audism and acknowledgement of Deaf Space at Gallaudet University.
Please remain respectful and civil to each other in hopes we all meet together in harmony and mutual respect. Finally, I truly want to thank those who have shown support and encouragement. Thank you. Shane.
Video: Critical Interrogation of Karl White's speech at TEDxUSU. (December 2012)
A Critical Interrogation of Karl White's presentation at TEDxUSU: Establishing a sound foundation for children who are deaf or hard of hearing as seen on http://youtu.be/bfN1RPVuzl0.
Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.
As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.
We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.
Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).

Video in CC (english transcilbed) - "Social progress can be measured by the social positions of the female sex" The global war we are fighting against the Islamic Jihad is not just about bombs and hijacked airliners. It's also about the oppression of women.
It is an utter disgrace that more people the world over - including and especially human rights and women's organizations - are not speaking out loudly against the hideous, violent treatment of women within Islam. This abuse has been going on for centuries, and little has changed over the past decades since the non-Muslim world began to take notice of Islam. In fact, Muslim apologists - including non-Muslim defenders - are very vocal in denying that women are abused and oppressed within Islam, an assertion that is patently false and mendacious. All of the apologies and apologetics in the world will not make these facts of violence against women go away, and day in and day out women and girls are treated abysmally in the Muslim world, simply because of their female gender - and because the wanton abuse of women is endorsed by the Islamic holy book, the Quran/Koran, as well as various commentaries thereon, such as the Hadiths, to the evident exultation of misogynists worldwide.
0. It is hard to determine if historical figures were autistic, but it is widely believed that Albert Einstein, Paul Dirac (Nobel Prize Physics 1933), and possibly Isaac Newton were autistic, among others. There are many who assert that autism and Musical/Mathematical genius are positively linked.
1. Alexander Graham Bell is actually a controversial figure. Q: Is it a contradiction to be both deaf and hearing? Are we involuntarily turning our children into cyborgs by giving them cochlear implants? Should we take advantage of critical periods of learning, or should we wait to allow a child to decide for him/herself whether he or she really wants a cochlear implant?
2. Dostoyevsky's full name is Fyodor Mikhaylovich Dostoyevsky (abbreviated in video).
3. Kay Kavus is a character from the Persian National Epic, the Letter of Kings (the Shahnameh). Note the winged man flying next to the throne.
4. Harriet Tubman was not actually born with narcolepsy. She developed it after being struck (violently) by an overseer when she was a slave.
5. Wheels, associated with wheelchairs, are in fact powerful philosophical and historical symbols. The Ashoka Chakra is a wheel associated with the idea of the Chakravartin, a righteous ruler who, without moving himself, becomes the axis around which the world turns.
6. Question (to contemplate): Is the significance of Princess Changping in Chinese Culture her historical role, or her mythical role as a figure in Chinese folklore?

Video: Oppression At West Tennessee School For The Deaf in American Sign Language.
A terror of oppression and audism at West Tennessee School for the Deaf (WTSD), which state-operated elementary school for Deaf children ages 2 to 13 from throughout west Tennessee in Jackson.
Regarding to the terrbile story that the Deafies to pay the visit at WTSD, all of suddenly the staff's rude attitude toward a deaf visitor and discriminated ASL users, and kicked out for no reason. However, a vlogger felt an insulted from the WTSD staff members and decided to posted a vlog.
We (deafies) should make effort to visit Deaf schools when we travel to some states. Good reminder to all of us. We need to watch out for red flags so we can stand up and protect Deaf children. The Deaf community agree with vloggers that there is something wrong with that school. The way how they treated deaf visitors is quite alarming because if they showed no respect for you as a Deaf adult then their treatment to Deaf children could be far worse.
WTSD's web-site says "An Individual Education Plan is developed for each student enrolled at WTSD. Total communication is used throughout our program by all staff members. Small class sizes and individualized programs aid in the success of our students. Continuous collaboration between teachers, speech pathologists, and audiologists provides optimal information for instructional programming." Is that a joke? watch the vlogs and weep.

Eugene, OR. - You've heard of sexism, racism, anti-Semitism... How about audism? Audism is discrimination based on the ability or inability to hear. Students met members of the local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.
Johanna Larson, University of Oregon, American Sign Language Instructor, moderated a screening of the documentary film, Audism Unveiled, and a panel discussion hosting members of our local Deaf community, who shared their encounters with audism, and their experiences growing up Deaf in a hearing world.
The film and discussion facilitated an examination of the rich and complex identities of Deaf Culture through "real life experiences from Deaf people of varied social, racial, and educational backgrounds-showing how audism does lasting and harmful damage." The event also included live transcription for the signing impaired.

This vblog discussing to support of the Petition we hopeful that we can recognize that we may overlook after a video publication, the video on the internet was met with a strong reaction from the ASL-users community. Many members of the community have objected to the video on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Kristin Henson's 'Dirty Signs with Kristin' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL Deaf community. A Hearing Opinion on Kristin and Her Dirty Signs
Just a little summary so you know what my opinion is in the meantime... I think that a hearing person (like Kristin and myself) needs to understand their place in the Deaf-world and community. We should never consider ourselves experts on sign language, we should never ignore Deaf people about their own language, and we should never appropriate their culture for monetary gain, which I feel Kristin is doing with her videos and new book deal.
Kristin Henson's Youtube vlogs has attracted an audience of more than 1,5 million and 11,615 subscribers but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'Dirty Signs With Kristin'. Leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning American Sign Language for Deaf and hearing adults as Kristin claimed "About Kristin Henson Page". Deafies viewers said incoherent videos makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what she is doing is a classic case of exploitation. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Kristin Henson, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the ASL-users community for cheap laughs and her 15 minutes of fame as seen on: A phrase in ASL just for Kristin Henson

1 in every 1,000 newborns are Deaf. 10% of those children's families are DEAF as well. Out of the remaining 90%, only 1/4 of them ever learn to sign. The remaining 3/4? They go throughout their life without ever being able to communicate with their kids. This is the story of a girl whose family is part of that 3/4.

Video: "If You Really Knew Me" story in captioned.
A heart touching story of a Deaf girl. her story, her speaking, her heart, poured out. If you are Deaf, hearing impaired, or just don't understand, here is what she said.
I was born with a hearing impairment. I was Deaf completly till the age of 6 because my parents got me hearing devices. But since I first stepped in elementary school, there was never a day someone would push me down, call me names, not talk to me, and mostly, never a day that my own school teacher would respect me.
I was stupid, and I was dumb. I would get best up at school because when I say "what, I can't hear you.." they would take that as sarcasm. I got referrals, suspensions, and got kicked out of school for things i haven't done. I was accused of "smoking in the bathroom" in my 4th grade year. I was "accused of beating up 3 girls in the back of school" when I didn't even know how to fight, and in field trips the principal was always picking me up and taking me to detention because I would get into fights, but they would pick up the ones who fought with me.
I was always in trouble for standing for myself. My own principal abused me, and even had me hold back a year in school for no reason whatsoever, almost fired my mom from her job and I left my last day of school with a concussion and four stab wounds on my back from those tacks that pin papers with on the wall because of this girl that would always fight me. I only had 1 friend in those years. but she was worse than me, she commit suicide at the age of thirteen I was eleven, I call the cops on it cause I had to watch her die.
Sad thing is I couldn't even attend the funeral, the parents had her buried in Arizona. I became suicidal, cut, drank smoked. I joined martial arts later. and I'm still in martial arts now to this day.
In 6th grade, I started having friends. People knew not to mess with me cause all this made me stronger. and I always had to get in a fight. But I was so happy when I didn't lose my first real fight that gained me full respect.
I was wondered though, why people are so cruel still. Especially when someone has a disability they have to live with there whole life, and they laugh about it. Actions may be stronger than words, but no one said words didn't hurt as well. I'm still hurt though. because its been since 6th grade that no ones bothered me until like two weeks ago, I cried my eyes out and just broke down, because this girl in my class would say "I m surprised you can hear the school bell." with a smirk.
If only i could put all those people in my shoes, and show them what its like to be like this, alone, rejected, hurt to judge what you don't understand. This is why I decide to give hugs. because in those times, nobody was there to give me one. No one deserves to live my life, a life without anyone beside them. I Love you guys, I promise. Guys,
If you lived with a disability, a bad habit, a different sexual orientation, or an impairment, and you blame it for all your problems, and what you've been through in your past, DON'T. Thank god for it. why?
It makes you stronger than anyone else that consider thereselves "normal", and you being the "Abnormal, weird, strange" person. It makes you more confident than others, and more tougher through out life. Don't reflect the pain you went through on others, turn that pain into something greater, and give something to others, that you never had before like friendship, love, HUGS kisses.
trust me, you will feel so much better. Published on 19 May 2012 by Aissixx
