Facebook Opens Worlds For The Deaf

VIDEO: (Subtitles) - Facebook opens worlds for the Deaf.

Nbcbayarea.com - One billion people use Facebook around the world. Its reach is undisputed and unparalleled, but its impact on one specific community has opened up doors to a new world for the Deaf.

Christina Teani, 34, of South San Francisco is a teacher for special needs students. She understands putting in that extra bit of effort because she was born with what she calls “an invisible disability” unable to hear without wearing a hearing aid.

“You can often feel like that sometimes you are not good enough, you don’t feel like you’re part of a group,” Teani explained. “Human relationships are all about intimacy, getting to know people, feeling like you belong in a group and if you’re not able to connect, you emotionally feel left out.”

But her life has changed, much like it has for her Deaf friend, Sarah McBride of Palo Alto.

“With Facebook, I’m able to communicate with my friends through chat,” she said.

These women say the social media site has opened up a whole new world to them, offering up not only quick chats with friends, but the ability to share memories through pictures and videos especially satisfying for them because it’s one of the first times they’ve been able to communicate the same way the hearing community does.

So when the opportunity came up to visit the company that made it happen, they didn’t hesitate. Together with friends, they took tour of Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park to celebrate the changes they’ve experienced in their lives.

“That’s what I like about Facebook," Teani said. "We’re all on the same playing field we haven’t had before.” ...READ MORE: http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/local/Facebook-IOpens-New-World-For-Deaf-186194282.html

Deaf-n-Dumb: Michael Hubbs, Unapologetically Detained

VIDEO: Michael Hubbs: Unapologetically Detained.

Deafndumb.com statement on Michael Hubbs of short track speed skater... Meh, meh, meh, haven't you heard? Before getting ahead of myself here... hasn't anybody gotten the opportunity to see just what Michael Hubbs had vlog'ged in terms to owing up to the community of his supposed-ly, 'back-then' ways of bigotry?

Having once to unbearably witness him, personally, myself the behavior of his own actions pertaining to the superficial negation made against one another, incompetently based on one's own sense of privileges, as sensed by the function of one's occipital lobes and of such granted arrogance. Akin to the skin color, to the person's sex, and to the weight of a person, were more often so the very accusations I had held against Hubbs -IST behaviors.

Often seen prevalently and publicly made on campus, with this blogger account, I inwardly cringe to myself while taking the time to document all things that I had thought he did was wrong, essentially empowering back the community to who I feared were donating their hard earned money... or welfare-ishly given, to Michael Hubbs own narcissistic desires.

Sure. I felt bad. Some called me out on the crab-theory conduct-ee theory where as I could be jealous of his ice-skating way (which by the way is a sport for those who failed on track... I figured, that perhaps ice-skating has the lesser amount of athletes who has the advantage of attaining to an ice rink in colder climates... but nevermind me and my ego-manicidal ways).

Some thought I was much too harsh on this aspiring Olympian-wannabe and should dismiss one of one's past to his ill-ways for the sake of his gold-medal. I never really gave much of a shit, only that I could only but say my piece to which I thought was worthy of speaking out and to call him out on it. ... Growth of Viral Video Leaves Deaf Community in the Dark

Washington Post - Growth of viral video leaves Deaf people in the dark.

Viral videos may be good for sharing ideas and spreading funny foreign pop hits, but they are leaving millions of Deaf and Hearing Impaired people out of the loop.

Online video is becoming a more ubiquitous part of American life. Netflix videos made up one-third of online data used in the United States last year. YouTube expects 90 percent of online traffic to be video in the next few years. By 2016, Cisco estimates, 1.2 million minutes of video will be streamed or downloaded every second.

That video explosion has been great for small-film and TV producers, who are able to reach an audience without a big studio budget, and fans of niche programming. But in some ways, it has left the deaf and hard-of-hearing community starting from scratch after years of advocating for captions on traditional television.

“We could be back to square one,” said Christian Vogler, director of the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University.

The rise of e-mails, instant messages and social media was a godsend to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, which embraced the new, text-based ways to communicate.

“In the mid- to late 1990s, it was close to the ideal medium,” Vogler said. But as the Web evolved to include more video, he said, old barriers to communication resurfaced. ... Chelesa Lately TV Show Under Fire For Mocks Sign Language

LOS ANGELES - Chelesa Lately TV show under fire for mocks sign language.

Late-night host Chelsea Handler (of the Chelsea Lately Show, on E! Network) has found herself in the center of controversy, due to this skit (air date: Oct 30, 2012) which many members of the ASL-users community say mocks and makes fun of the language they use to communicate: ASL (American Sign Language). In the skit, a member of the cast mocks Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ASL Interpreter Lydia Callis, who translated for the Mayor's Hurricane Sandy press conferences, as seen on YouTube video.

Many people unfamiliar with ASL and the plight of the Oralism and Hard of Hearing don't realize that facial expressions and body movements are a part of ASL, and hence it is a protected activity, with communication considered a 'major life activity' under the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).

Video by AdamSlowHandSmith

And what some with hearing (like Chelsea) would consider as "over-exaggerated" facial expressions and body movements are used for a good reason, not to "editorialize" or to be "passionate", but to communicate linguistic elements that those with hearing convey by way of vocal inflection, pitch, rhythm, pace, etc, and take for granted.

America’s largest Deaf organisation, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has written an open letter to the producers of a comedy show accusing them of “mocking” American Sign Language. Even, Deaf advocacy organization, Deaf Nation, released a letter the group sent to Handler.

The following article is required reading for everyone (esp. people who think like Chelsea), to understand what they're seeing: http://www.mentalfloss.com/blogs/archives/149593

(Also check out the comments section below the article, as they provide further information which is important to understand the issue.)

E! Entertainment Television corporate lawyers probably will feel compelled to file a DMCA take-down notice with YouTube (as is their right, as they own the copyright), but I WILL file a DMCA counter-notice, demanding they file suit in Federal Court for copyright infringement. If they need to have a Judge lecture them on the basics of the principle of "fair use" exceptions allowed under U.S. Federal Copyright law, then they can be my guest.

On the other hand, I'm willing to consider relinquishing my right to this "fair use" (public commentary) if the "Chelsea Lately Show" offers a public apology for whatever insult and harm they have caused, perhaps with a statement educating their viewers as to why ASL interpreters must use non-gestural components as a part of ASL, to be broadcast on the Chelsey Lately show in an opening monologue, with a message that is deemed acceptable by representatives of the Deaf community (eg Deaf Nation).

Laugh at or Laugh With?

Video by ASLWORKS

Discussing my thoughts on issues surrounding TV Show - Chelesa Lately's skit on Hurricane Sandy's Breakout Star: Lydia Callis, NY Mayor Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter. Making fun of American Sign Language (ASL) in national spotlight is definitely lame and politically-incorrect despite unexpected and pricesless promotion of our beloved and respectful language recently. An interpreter's main role is to convey information rather than become a celebrity for the ignorant. Deaf people are aware of such mainstream fasincation with interpreters and our "beautiful" language. So I bring up the question that is OK to laugh at or laugh with and basically shrug this off? I think this whole publicity stunt is a turkey. I forgot to mention in my vlog: What if this was a terrorist attack rather than a weather crisis in NYC? OK to laugh at or with Lydia's national exposure? I think not.

Your Jokes About Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreters Aren't Funny

NEW YORK - (TheAtlanticWire)- Your Jokes About Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreters Aren't Funny.

These days, a major world event can’t happen without an accompanying meme. During Hurricane Sandy, the new social media star is Lydia Callis, the American Sign Language interpreter who appears next to the Mayor at press conferences and whose facial expressions have garnered her an internet following and – the ultimate status symbol on the internet a fan TumblrOutlets like NPR are calling her “a star” on the level of El Bloombito, the Spanglish-snark Twitter account that added some levity to Hurricane Irene by making fun of Michael R. Bloomberg’s terrible attempts to speak Spanish.

While most of the comments about Lydia online have been positive, they’re positive in an ironic and subtly mocking sort of way. The title of the Tumblr is “Lydia Callis’ face for NYC mayor” not her whole body, just her face, as seen on YouTube with closed captioned:

Video by TopTen10Videos

Laine Nooney, a PhD candidate at SUNY-Stony Brook, tweeted that Callis is “the only SL interpreter I've ever seen who signs with a New York accent.” TruTV’s “Dumb as a Blog” even catalogued 12 of Callis’ facial expressions, giving each a nickname like “The Double Yodas” and “The Hiarious Paperback.” In some of them, Callis is articulating herself in a way that would be completely relatable to any signer. “The Double Yodas” makes fun of the sign itself two hands in “Y” shapes pulling downward, which can either mean “now” or “today” while purporting to be a joke about Callis’ facial expression in the screencap... Lydia Callis: Bloomberg's Interpreter Goes Viral

NEW YORK CITY - A Rochester Institute of Technology graduate skyrocketed into fame while providing American Sign Language interpretation during New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s nationally watched news conferences.

Meet Lydia Callis, the mayor's sign language interpretor who became the city's newest hearthrob. Stealing the show with her passionate facial expressions and signs.

Clearly there is nothing funny about mass casualties and a region under water. But Lydia Callis has at least given people something to smile about in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

The Perfect Storm: Hurricane 'Frankenstorm' Sandy

WASHINGTON - The Perfect Storm: Hurricane 'Frankenstorm' Sandy - As Hurricane Sandy approaches the east coast of the United States and Canada, weather forecasters are wondering if Sandy will be worse than the 'Perfect Storm' of 1991.

According to the Washington Post, Sandy has already claimed the lives of nearly two dozen people in the Caribbean. Nine people were killed in Haiti, 11 in Cuba and 1 in Jamaica. Extensive damage due to flash flooding and mudslides was also reported. Although Sandy is currently listed as category 1 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 80 MPH, meteorologists are warning that she may hit the northeastern coast of the United States with powerful winds and rains. Perfect storm 2012, which the Hurricane Sandy turns into 'Frankenstorm' deadly to hit the northeast. Here is the exclusive weather report to warn everyone! Brace yourselves for the spooky Halloween storm!

Hurricane 'Frankenstorm' Sandy to Hit the East Next Week.

Video by NewsyHub

An unusual nasty mix of a hurricane and a winter storm that forecasters are now calling 'Frankenstorm' is likely to blast most of the East Coast next week, focusing the worst of its weather mayhem around New York City and New Jersey.

Government forecasters on Thursday upped the odds of a major weather mess, now saying there's a 90 percent chance that the East will get steady gale-force winds, heavy rain, flooding and maybe snow starting Sunday and stretching past Halloween on Wednesday.

Hurricane Sandy seen from Space Frankenstorm forming Snor'eastercane.

Video by pointblankperiods

Meteorologists say it is likely to cause $1 billion in damage.

The storm is a combination of Hurricane Sandy, now in the Caribbean, an early winter storm in the West, and a blast of arctic air from the North. They're predicted to collide and park over the country's most populous coastal corridor and reach as far inland as Ohio.

The hurricane part of the storm is likely to come ashore somewhere in New Jersey on Tuesday morning, said National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration forecaster Jim Cisco. But this is a storm that will affect a far wider area, so people all along the East have to be wary, Cisco said.

Coastal areas from Florida to Maine will feel some effects, mostly from the hurricane part, he said, and the other parts of the storm will reach inland from North_Carolina northward.

Once the hurricane part of the storm hits, "it will get broader. It won't be as intense, but its effects will be spread over a very large area," the National Hurricane Center's chief hurricane specialist, James Franklin, said Thursday.

One of the more messy aspects of the expected storm is that it just won't leave. The worst of it should peak early Tuesday, but it will stretch into midweek, forecasters say. Weather may start clearing in the mid-Atlantic the day after Halloween and Nov. 2 in the Northeast, Cisco said.

"It's almost a weeklong, five-day, six-day event," Cisco said Thursday from NOAA's northern storm forecast center in College Park, Md. "It's going to be a widespread serious storm." With every hour, meteorologists are getting more confident that this storm is going to be bad and they're able to focus their forecasts more.

Deaf Quadriplegic David Rose Is A Hoax

(CBS News) - Popular Deaf, Paraplegic blogger “Dave on Wheels” David Rose exposed as an elaborate hoax.

Social media worldwide has been subjected to an elaborate hoax, conned into thinking that Dave, a Deaf quadriplegic with cerebral palsy, actually existed.

The story of Dave Rose was followed by millions until he died, and that's when the real story emerged.

(New York Daily News) - David Rose’s farewell letter to his friends and family touched hearts around the country. But David, a Deaf 24-year-old with severe cerebral palsy that left him confined to a wheelchair, never existed. A fraudster invented him in an act of ‘role-playing.’

David Rose, a Deaf quadriplegic whose dying words to his family and friends became an online sensation, never existed. An anonymous man admitted the whole thing was an elaborate hoax that went on for years.

Online, Rose was a cheerful 24-year-old from California whose inability to hear or walk didn’t interfere with his quirky sense of humor. He maintained a blog, a Twitter account and a Facebook page that had been active since 2007.

Last week, a post on his blog said he died after a short battle with pneumonia, and he’d written a letter to be posted by his "sister" Nichole if he passed.

The story was picked up by national news outlets, and even Kim Kardashian tweeted a quote from Rose’s letter: "Always do what is right. Always! But forgive yourself if you forget sometimes... Marlee Matlin Fears For Deaf Stem-Cell Treatment

Marlee Matlin tweets concerns about a possible stem cell cure for deafness.

British researchers have been able to rebuild nerves in the ears of gerbils, and it is believed the same technique could one day be applicable to Deaf humans. However, Oscar-winning actress Matlin, who has been Deaf since she was 18 months old, is worried about the implications of the development. Matlin has been tweeting her mixed feelings about the recently announced “stem cell cure” for deafness.

Matlin commented that millions of Deaf Americans who communicate in sign language do not regard deafness as a "handicap" or a "'disease' to cure." She posted these comments on Twitter: “Imagine how I must feel with my children with me at the grocery store and someone says "I heard there's a cure for your deafness!" Think.”
