Gallaudet Community Mourns Mother and Daughter Killed in Falls Church House Fire
Video: Gallaudet Community Mourns Mother and Daughter Killed in Falls Church House Fire.
The Washington Post - Hot pink and yellow not black were the colors of choice for Laura Snyder-Gardner and Mary Ann Gardner’s memorial service Sunday.
The colors were bright and positive and radiated energy, exactly how those who loved them remembered the mother and daughter, who died last week in a Falls Church house fire.
Friends, family members and faculty turned into a sea of pink and yellow Mary Ann’s favorite colors as they gathered at Gallaudet University in Northeast Washington.
They fondly recalled Snyder-Gardner’s generous and nurturing spirit, with many students calling the Gallaudet math professor a “second mom.” And they mourned the loss of Mary Ann’s “radiant smile,” which friends and classmates said was infectious even from afar... Capt. William Moreland, a spokesman with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said firefighters were called to the home in the 3100 block of Manor Rd. The entire single-level ranch-style home was completely engulfed when crews arrived.
Moreland said they will release the identities of the victims once family has been notified.
Steve Klass, who lives next door to the destroyed home, said he was awakened by a loud roaring sound at about 3:30 a.m. He said a woman who lived at the home, who was Deaf, could be heard screaming... Scottish Yachtsman Become The First Deaf Person To Sail Non Stop Around The World
GLASGOW, UK - Video with Subtitles - Scottish yachtsman in a bid to become the first deaf person to sail single handed non-stop around the world, Gerry Hughes set sail from Troon Marina at 12.00pm on Saturday 1st September 2012.
A Scottish teacher who was born profoundly deaf is aiming to be the first deaf person to sail single-handed, non-stop around the world past all five capes – a journey made famous by the likes of Sir Francis Chichester and the legendary Sir Robin Knox Johnston.
This undertaking, being a landmark in the achievements of this incredible adventurer will also serve as beacon to the Deaf community and any of the many individuals who look to Gerry as a role model. Crowds gathered to witness this momentous and historic occasion. Helen Moonie, Lord Provost of South Ayrshire was there in person to give her personal greetings and stepped on board the yacht to wish Gerry well and is looking forward to welcoming him back to Troon shores. Both Gerry and Quest III were blessed by Reverend Richard Durno and there were emotional scenes as Gerry bade farewell to close friends and family before waving up to the onlookers as he prepared to set sail.
Scottish production companies AC2.com Productions Ltd and Incorporated Media have joined forces to document this historic attempt and with footage shot by Gerry himself will create an intimate, emotional and inspiring record of his incredible journey. SWNS was also there to capture the story in pictures for the National Press. You can follow Gerry's progress on the site via updates from Gerry as and when they are received. Please also see http://www.facebook.com/groups/GerryHughesQuestlll for further coverage.
We all wish Gerry the very best of luck and look forward to his safe return!

Colorado Springs, Co. One local man in Colorado Springs won't let disability get in the way of helping others and achieving his goal. Fox 21'S Matthew Kruger has the story.
Kyle Viola is a student teacher at Stratton Elementary School. This is first year as a student teacher, but there is something a little different about his teaching style. "I am profoundly Deaf, so I cannot hear anything at all," He says. "My teaching style is to communicate to kids through sign language and voice."
Viola is working on his masters degree in Deaf education from the University of Northern Colorado. He attended grade schools in district eleven, and is happy to be back. He is a student teacher for Kate Foote. "Kyle is a fabulous role model for our children," She says. "For the most part, They understand me well." Explains Kyle. "Sometimes they don't understand me with my voice. It's not perfectly clear."
Video by FOX21NewsColorado
Kate and Kyle work together to teach the students the phonics portion of the curriclum. "Seeing himself make himself understood to these children, through both signs and speech...
