The announcers at the Entertainer's Basketball Classic at Rucker Park will tell you that the modern day Harlem Shake was started by a man by the name of "Al B" (nickname Sisqo or Cisco). Al B was an alcoholic that would do the dance upon request. Because of its founder, the dance was originally called the "albee" in Rucker and Harlem, but then later became known as the Harlem Shake. ... LOS ANGELES - Chelesa Lately TV show under fire for mocks sign language.
Late-night host Chelsea Handler (of the Chelsea Lately Show, on E! Network) has found herself in the center of controversy, due to this skit (air date: Oct 30, 2012) which many members of the ASL-users community say mocks and makes fun of the language they use to communicate: ASL (American Sign Language). In the skit, a member of the cast mocks Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ASL Interpreter Lydia Callis, who translated for the Mayor's Hurricane Sandy press conferences, as seen on YouTube video.
And what some with hearing (like Chelsea) would consider as "over-exaggerated" facial expressions and body movements are used for a good reason, not to "editorialize" or to be "passionate", but to communicate linguistic elements that those with hearing convey by way of vocal inflection, pitch, rhythm, pace, etc, and take for granted.
(Also check out the comments section below the article, as they provide further information which is important to understand the issue.)
E! Entertainment Television corporate lawyers probably will feel compelled to file a DMCA take-down notice with YouTube (as is their right, as they own the copyright), but I WILL file a DMCA counter-notice, demanding they file suit in Federal Court for copyright infringement. If they need to have a Judge lecture them on the basics of the principle of "fair use" exceptions allowed under U.S. Federal Copyright law, then they can be my guest.
On the other hand, I'm willing to consider relinquishing my right to this "fair use" (public commentary) if the "Chelsea Lately Show" offers a public apology for whatever insult and harm they have caused, perhaps with a statement educating their viewers as to why ASL interpreters must use non-gestural components as a part of ASL, to be broadcast on the Chelsey Lately show in an opening monologue, with a message that is deemed acceptable by representatives of the Deaf community (eg Deaf Nation).
Vlog with closed captioned, who not understand in ASL. Discussion of the reasons Lydia Callis (interpreter for Mayor Bloomberg during Hurricane Sandy) has become so "famous" and the language attitudes behind this. A comparison to language attitudes surrounding Chinese is made.
(Sorry my signing isn't the best... CODA...) But here's what I'd like to say to Chelsea Handler if I could! PS- I added CC for those who can't understand.
Discussing my thoughts on issues surrounding TV Show - Chelesa Lately's skit on Hurricane Sandy's Breakout Star: Lydia Callis, NY Mayor Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter. Making fun of American Sign Language (ASL) in national spotlight is definitely lame and politically-incorrect despite unexpected and pricesless promotion of our beloved and respectful language recently. An interpreter's main role is to convey information rather than become a celebrity for the ignorant. Deaf people are aware of such mainstream fasincation with interpreters and our "beautiful" language. So I bring up the question that is OK to laugh at or laugh with and basically shrug this off? I think this whole publicity stunt is a turkey. I forgot to mention in my vlog: What if this was a terrorist attack rather than a weather crisis in NYC? OK to laugh at or with Lydia's national exposure? I think not.
Lydia Callis, the interpreter for Mayor Bloomberg during Hurricane Sandy, became famous on internet overnight because of her facial expressions. A number of Deaf people have expressed their objection against those who mock the interpreter and American Sign Language, especially the comedian Chelsea Handler. How should we, as Deaf individuals, response to such mockery of our culture and language?
I do have to use my voice so the hearing people can watch this too. I hope they understand too, because that was just uncalled for. I just learned that Saturday Night Live just made fun of us. It's spreading like wildfire!
(ABC News with Captions) - Bullied Teen Leaves Behind Chilling YouTube Video.
Port Coquitlam, Canada - A teenager posted a heartbreaking video on YouTube chronicling years of bullying in school and online, cutting and humiliation up until she died this week.
Amanda Todd, 15, posted the video called "My story: Struggling, bullying, suicide, self harm" on Sept. 7 and was found dead in her home town of Port Coquitlam, British Columbia, just over a month later.
"Hello, I've decided to tell you about my never ending story," the black and white video begins. Todd can only be seen from her nose down for most of the video, occasionally moving around so that her face is visible. She silently tells her story through a series of white cards with black marker writing on them.
I'm struggling to stay in this world, because everything just touches me so deeply. I'm not doing this for attention. I'm doing this to be an inspiration and to show that I can be strong. I did things to myself to make pain go away, because I'd rather hurt myself then someone else. Haters are haters but please don't hate, although im sure I'll get them. I hope I can show you guys that everyone has a story, and everyones future will be bright one day, you just gotta pull through. I'm still here aren't I ?
RIP Amanda Todd - November 27, 1996- October 10, 2012

Vlog In American Sign Language (ASL), I wanted to share my own opinion and based on my observation of the recent chaotic situation in the deaf video web. I wanted to quote the description of a stereotype. It is a public belief about a certain social group or a type of individual. Stereotype is always based on any prior assumption by the certain groups or individuals. Stereotypes are often created about people of specific cultures or races. So any time if you are grouping races or individuals together. You tend to make a judgment about them without knowing them. This is a classical example of a stereotype. Racial remarks, sexual remarks, and gender remarks are the biggest stereotypes.
So what I see in this DVtv, a deaf social network with the diversities of deaf people all around the world is now focusing on the stereotyping against each others within the deaf communities. "Deafhood", "Beasthood", "Orange Group", "Blue Group", "Deaf Trash", "Low Functions" and the lists goes on were the subject of the deaf stereotypes. That kind of stereotyping approaches in this DVtv should be avoided...Why can't we get along with each others and just be you!!!! Take pride and believing in youself to create the video is the best solution. There is the list of the stereotype examples at the end of the video. Subscribe DJDeafJoey
Video: Oppression At West Tennessee School For The Deaf in American Sign Language.
A terror of oppression and audism at West Tennessee School for the Deaf (WTSD), which state-operated elementary school for Deaf children ages 2 to 13 from throughout west Tennessee in Jackson.
Regarding to the terrbile story that the Deafies to pay the visit at WTSD, all of suddenly the staff's rude attitude toward a deaf visitor and discriminated ASL users, and kicked out for no reason. However, a vlogger felt an insulted from the WTSD staff members and decided to posted a vlog.
We (deafies) should make effort to visit Deaf schools when we travel to some states. Good reminder to all of us. We need to watch out for red flags so we can stand up and protect Deaf children. The Deaf community agree with vloggers that there is something wrong with that school. The way how they treated deaf visitors is quite alarming because if they showed no respect for you as a Deaf adult then their treatment to Deaf children could be far worse.
WTSD's web-site says "An Individual Education Plan is developed for each student enrolled at WTSD. Total communication is used throughout our program by all staff members. Small class sizes and individualized programs aid in the success of our students. Continuous collaboration between teachers, speech pathologists, and audiologists provides optimal information for instructional programming." Is that a joke? watch the vlogs and weep.
Message for both Principal of WTSD, Kristi Lindsey and Superintendent of TSD, Alan Mealka regarding Principal's rude attitude toward a deaf visitor on Aug 7, 2012.
The ghost tracks of San Antonio video in American Sign Language.
San Antonio, TX. - Numerous of Deafies heard the stories about these railroad tracks located on Shane Road where a train struck a school bus during the 1940s and killed the bus driver and all children on the bus.
The urban legend is that a long time ago about haunted railroad tracks near San Antonio, Texas... anyhow, the Deafies decided to do some investigation on their own, and to their amazement they actually found some shocking evidence. The car did indeed go up the hill and over the tracks with the ignition turned off even. They even tried it with the car going backwards and it still worked.
They even noticed very apparent fingerprints on the trunk of the car after pouring baby powder on it and going over the tracks. They say that if you put baby powder on the back on your car the kids handprints will appear. The story and posted by Stacey De Laune.
The Election Committee of the National Association of the Deaf voting system fraudulent ??? How does the voting system works during selection of NAD Officers. Questions about how the delegates are supposed to do at NAD Conference. Numerous of Deafies heard about the voting had been rigged.
Electronic voting (also known as e-voting) is a term encompassing several different types of voting, embracing both electronic means of casting a vote and electronic means of counting votes as seen on wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_voting A public network DRE voting system is an election system that uses electronic ... Internet voting to elect officers and Board members and for other proxy elections, ... and include software, different methods of election fraud become possible.
The Deaf Community keeps hearing different stories such as favoritism and fixture but a certain if they all are true, however, one source said the voting system can be cheated when the ballots are counted to choose by the NAD staff. It is damaged now and it is disgusted for the Deaf Communties and will fight it in next election of 2014. The thing is it's the special interest groups such as Z|CSDVRS keep NAD positions in their hands for a number of years. Way too long. They should allow others to run NAD for a change. People's rationale about being a delegate but sit is according to the NAD bylaws that change comes through the State Associations. Please watch on iDeafNews video: https://vimeo.com/45343477 before you read this blog and watch vlogs in ASL.
Terms of "Status Quo" and "Patronizing Deaf Community." What Ridor said just now is exactly the same thing a State Association of the Deaf is doing to the State Deaf Community. It is very sad to know that organization(s) owned by members are SO SO hesistant for positive changes. Instead of making changes we need, the organization(s) puts us back in medieval times.
NAD Delegates Equal Right Votes?
NAD Delegates Equal Right Votes? In which the election committee announced official candidates NAD Presidential elections that Chris Wagner has been selected to serve as the NAD's president in which the Z|CSDVRS's vice president Chris Wagner is operating systems. The many of Deaf Communites finds disburbing and uncomfortable the words 'DEAF MILITANTS' commencement speech ideas from the Z|CSDVRS company, as seen on article: Deaf Militant Is An 'Intergenerative' Hate Speech
Deaf Communites should continue contacting FCC to file complaint and boycotting such services. They have no business of throwing labels to a population they services while receiving federal funds. Also, censoring freedom of speech and social media while implementing their own agendas for NAD Presidential selection. Neutral and non-discriminatory must! Consequences.
CSD has been harboring NAD and weakening its system for over a decade! NAD Voting System - Number one important - first thing - let us all focus to see if NAD will do fix the bylaws - Voting systems need to change asap!

The Z|CSDVRS, LLC."that FCC will investigate such a hate speech and find out why Deaf Militants is an 'intergenerative' hate speech. That just fits the federal Hate Crime Statistics Act (HCSA). Why? It is a federal approach. HCSA requires the Justice department (DOJ) to acquire data on crimes which "manifest prejudice based on race, religion, sexual orientation, or ethnicity.' FCC will be required to refer your letter to DOJ. See below:

Dear Sir:
I, the undersigned, request that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) investigates an apparently slanderous email written and distributed by Julian Moiwai, the Social Media Coordinator of Z|Communication Service for the Deaf Video Relay Services (Z|CSDVRS), to his employees and contractors. The Z|CSDVRS is federally funded for the provision of Video Relay Services (VRS) that is governed by the rules adopted by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) (47 C.F.R. 65.601 et. seq.) pursuant to the FCC's authority under Section 225 of the Communications Act of 1934, as amended, 47 U.S.C. 225. Moiwai's statement that "ZVRS is currently being bombarded on social media by Sheri [Farinha] supporters or so-called "Deaf militiants (sic)," begs for an official reprimand.
I am not very comfortable with the fact that such federally funded agencies like the Z and CSD played politics during the presidential election in the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) Conference last week. The Z|CSDVRS's Vice President Chris Wagner won the NAD presidential election. I ask that the FCC stops meddling in any consumer organization by federally funded agencies.
Sincerely,

This vblog discussing to support of the Petition we hopeful that we can recognize that we may overlook after a video publication, the video on the internet was met with a strong reaction from the ASL-users community. Many members of the community have objected to the video on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Kristin Henson's 'Dirty Signs with Kristin' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL Deaf community. A Hearing Opinion on Kristin and Her Dirty Signs
Just a little summary so you know what my opinion is in the meantime... I think that a hearing person (like Kristin and myself) needs to understand their place in the Deaf-world and community. We should never consider ourselves experts on sign language, we should never ignore Deaf people about their own language, and we should never appropriate their culture for monetary gain, which I feel Kristin is doing with her videos and new book deal.
Kristin Henson's Youtube vlogs has attracted an audience of more than 1,5 million and 11,615 subscribers but Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'Dirty Signs With Kristin'. Leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning American Sign Language for Deaf and hearing adults as Kristin claimed "About Kristin Henson Page". Deafies viewers said incoherent videos makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what she is doing is a classic case of exploitation. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Kristin Henson, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the ASL-users community for cheap laughs and her 15 minutes of fame as seen on: A phrase in ASL just for Kristin Henson
Last a few weeks ago, A Deaf vlogger's name is Victoria just released video with captions to response for "Dirty Signs With Kristin" - Featuring Kristin Henson in which the videos was under FIRE for flubbing a many wrong gestures of dirty signs and insulted the ASL-Culture community.
Listen Up, Kristin (of Dirty Signs With Kristin, @thfemale)
Kristin Henson's horrible dirty signs - They are just bad and her selection of really mocking and ludicrous phrases to "teach" to the public shows a huge disrespect for ASL-users and Deaf people. Petition about Kristen Henson's ridiculous dirty signs contract which ridicules real ASL and Deaf discourse.

Numerous Deaf people of the community finds quite interesting the hot debate about the mistake and nonsense of the music in American Sign Language videos in these days.
Mark Nakhla's ASL video is the worst since as similar in the hearies world refered "Rebecca Black's "Friday" Music Video" the worst music video of the century... anyway, back to the ASL issue, a music ASL video that Deaf people as native ASL users barely unable to understand the dudes sign language amateurs are now under fire a horrbile ASL, which is completely different than signs in a signed language, we only see thier gestures.
Signing these dudes claimed that they used ASL to interpret the song of a video which expert ASL teaching consultant saying that it confused alot of Deaf people who watched this. Mark Nakhla's video.

Last a few weeks ago, Sir Paul McCartney just released a music ASL video for "My Valentine" - Featuring Natalie Portman and Johnny Depp in which a video was under fire for major mistake for flubbing a few wrong gestures. Signing tampon instead of appear and enemy instead of valentine. A rep for the British Deaf Association says It would have been nice if genuine Deaf people had been used. However, this video clip is only for American Sign Language, not for British Sign Language.

This didn't come out completely as I planned, but I guess the gist of my message is there. I just think it's important to remember that you're 'famous' because of ASL... and now you are not including the Deaf community in your new endeavors at all.
It seems sort of ironic that by wanting to become a part of the YouTube community, you are saying goodbye to another one (maybe not personally, but publicly as a YouTube figure). As a hearing person, I can't speak for Deaf people, but I think this is the reason why they're sometimes hesitant about hearing people entering/representing their community. Maybe you could try to do some vlogs about Deaf related things, or include them somehow.
Allyballybabe has something in her YouTube "about me" that I've always liked: "one more thing i am very concerned about. though ASL is extremely beautiful and interesting, it is important to remember WHERE and WHO ASL came from... the Deaf. " Just some thoughts.
