VIDEO: Good Morning America: Exclusive interview with Marlee Matlin in Landmark 'Switched at Birth' Episode. (Captioned)
Actress discusses taking a risk in using American Sign Language and subtitles on ABC Family's ‘Switched at Birth.’
Actress Marlee Matlin came by Good Morning America March 4 2013 to talk about the landmark new episode of Switched at Birth, which will be the first in history to be aired on television entirely in American Sign Language. Marlee Matlin, who is Deaf in real life, appeared with a translator, who facilitated the interview between her and Robin Roberts.
Matlin said it’s been an amazing journey for her, because she began in the business 28 years ago trying to get her language, American Sign Language, across to anyone watching television or movies. She said it’s going to be beautiful to show and highlight to the whole world the culture of American Sign Language.
The clip they showed of tonight’s Switched at Birth episode was extremely powerful. I’ve never seen the show, but Marlee Matlin and actress Lea Thompson were sitting at a dining room table signing to each other about how to get reporters to a high school presentation of Romeo And Juliet.
The clip was completely silent. There wasn’t even background noise. The silence, plus the American Sign Language used by both actresses discussing something as everyday as a high school play, was really striking and wonderful. It’s going to be a great episode. ... Marlee Matlin Top 5 Youngest Academy Award Winners

BiteSizeTop5Video - Kicking things off at number five, we've got Marlee Matlin, who took home the Best Actress trophy in 1986 for her role as Sarah Norman in Children of a Lesser God. Matlin was just 21 years old when she became not just the youngest winner ever for the category, but also the first Deaf person to take home an Oscar.
Next up, the only guy on our Top Five - Timothy Hutton, who won Best Supporting Actor in 1980 for his role in Robert Redford's Ordinary People. Hutton, now a television star, was only 20 when he took home the gold.
At number three we've got our most legendary performance on the list - Patty Duke's incredible portrayal of Helen Keller in 1962 classic The Miracle Worker. Duke was only 16 years old when she stunned audiences across the country with her heartbreaking performance and won the Best Supporting Actress prize.
Number two on our list is also our most recent award - Anna Paquin's 1993 win for her Supporting role in The Piano. The actress was a mere eleven years old when she took home the Oscar, and has since gone on to star in both blockbuster films like X-Men and art-house classics like Margaret.
And finally, the youngest Academy Award winner of all time is... Tatum O'Neal, who won Best Supporting Actress in 1973 for her role in Paper Moon. O'Neal was just ten years old when she gave her award-winning performance alongside her father, Ryan - that's the age most kids are in the fourth grade! Amazing.

Marlee Matlin Calls Saturday Night Live's Deaf Signing Skit "Childish & Insulting"

Deaf actress Marlee Matlin is criticizing Saturday Night Live for the NBC show's recent deaf signing sketch, which spoofed New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg's sign language interpreter Lydia Callis and her animated signing during the Hurricane Sandy press conferences as seen Lydia Callis: Bloomberg's interpreter goes viral.
"I don't mind fun poked at me, as I poke back," the Dancing with the Stars alum tweeted Sunday. "But at the language, that millions use? It feels childish and insulting."
"Sign is not mime; it is a legit language," Matlin also tweeted. "Deaf people HAVE a sense of humor. Ever see me on Family Guy or Seinfeld? But faking signs that we use isn't the same. ... Read more: http://www.tvguide.com/News/Marlee-Matlin-SNL-Deaf-Signing-1055572.aspx

ASL is a Gift Translated by Deanne Bray
"ASL is a Gift" is a poem written by Julie Rems-Smario and translated by Deanne Bray. Final revision of ASL translation on September 21, 2012. It was June 2012 when Wayne Betts gave one small suggestion in adding something to ASL. He signed SI5S. I expanded on that idea and made this version into the translation that I am fully content and will stick to this. Here is my ASL translation of ASL is a GIFT in American Sign Language. Happy Autumn!
Julie Rems-Smario wrote...
ASL is a gift of language
ASL is a gift of embracing
ASL is a gift of understanding
ASL is a gift of communication
ASL is a gift of dignity
ASL is a gift of acceptance
ASL is a gift of creativity
ASL is a gift of intelligence
ASL is a gift of connection

Aidan Mack Hosts Talk Show For The Deaf
Westchester Newsday - Croton woman hosts talk show for the Deaf.
Television is a visual medium, but most talk shows just aren’t the same on mute. One Croton-on-Hudson woman is turning the traditional interview format on its head by telling her guests to talk with their hands.
Independent producer Aidan Mack has teamed up with White Plains Community Media (WPCM) to produce “The Aidan Mack Show,” in which Mack interviews guests exclusively in American Sign Language. The show will be one of the first of its kind designed specifically for Deaf audiences.
“I realized that I wanted to reach a larger audience, the hearing community, and work with them to become more comfortable interacting with Deaf people, regardless of language differences,” she said. “At the same time, I also want to dispel the misconceptions and myths about Deaf people, and show that Deaf people do live normal lives like everyone else.”

Marlee Matlin Fears For Deaf Stem-Cell Treatment

British researchers have been able to rebuild nerves in the ears of gerbils, and it is believed the same technique could one day be applicable to Deaf humans. However, Oscar-winning actress Matlin, who has been Deaf since she was 18 months old, is worried about the implications of the development. Matlin has been tweeting her mixed feelings about the recently announced “stem cell cure” for deafness.
Matlin commented that millions of Deaf Americans who communicate in sign language do not regard deafness as a "handicap" or a "'disease' to cure." She posted these comments on Twitter: “Imagine how I must feel with my children with me at the grocery store and someone says "I heard there's a cure for your deafness!" Think.”
"Deafness cure" is trending. My concern is that it's bigger than a "trend." It involves people and not as simple as the 4 letters in "cure." According to The Telegraph, some Deaf people feel that they don’t need to be fixed by medical intervention. The National Association of the Deaf says that many profoundly Deaf people who sign consider themselves to be part of a unique linguistic group through sign language and a unique Deaf culture.
Matlin's comments reflect the views of many members of the Deaf community...

NBC Discriminates Deaf Community ?

The National Association for the Deaf announced that the NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, will perform the national anthem and America the Beautiful in American sign language (ASL) at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012. The NAD in partnership with PepsiCo worked closely with the National Football League to ensure that America's songs would be delivered in ASL at the Super Bowl. The NAD hopes that the national broadcast will include the signed performance. Actually ironic video showed Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV! very typical examples.
Rachel Mazique unseen on television at Super Bowl.
Video by XLVISuperBowlNumerous Deaf people of the community in the United States very disappointed with the NBC didn't show Rachel Mazique signing the National Anthem on the Super Bowl as seen on the video. Must be a more reason to hate it. what a shame! no camera was focused on her. NBC didn't even try to get Rachel Mazique on TV. Is NBC anti-deaf? Is AG Bell, and HB 1367 in Indiana has been agreement with the NBC to avoids the signed performance on the national broadcast? The NAD and PepsiCo typically meaning of failing cooperation with the NBC/NFL as well? The Deaf community wondering what the NAD are working with? or an epic fail? Deaf people hopefully the NAD give an explanation why does Rachel Mazique isn't on TV after all...
Update: Statements from Ms. Rachel Mazique's Facebook Page. She was posted at FB:
"To my family, friends, fans, supporters: Thank you for rooting for me. I'm as disappointed as you are that American Sign Language gained no exposure. ASL was also not shown on the JumboTron inside the stadium as far as I know. I have poor quality videos of me signing...blurry...signs and face cut off at some points.. shaky film because my mom was being pushed around on the sidelines...not sure if they are worth posting.."
"I am so sorry you didn't get the chance to see me on TV and I thank you all for your support and excitement. I'm re-posting this from someone's comment on my status: "Post your videos! And I got this off someone else's status: Found this email address in case you are interested in writing NBC regarding Rachel Mazique not being shown in the pre-game: nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com." Some are also tweeting to NBC. If enough people in the general public express their disappointment, next year's performer should get air time."
