Deaf Football Players Use Secret Weapon

LOS ANGELES (NBC) - Deaf football players use secret weapon. 19 players and the coach on this small football team have brought grit and motivation to the field, using color coded signs and their own language to communicate.

They were an undermanned high school football team from Fremont, California. Only 19 players from a small school, and they're under sized, not one player even 200 pounds, which made their run to a 10-2 record and elite championship something special. But the CSD Eagles overcame an even bigger obstacle on the way to friday night glory because CSD stands for California School for the Deaf. That's right. Every player and coach Warren Keller, too, is Deaf. NBC’s Mike Taibbi reports from Fremont, California.

TRANSCRIPT:

Finally tonight an example from the fields of play about how to get past seemingly insurmountable challenges and about the rewards that follow when you pull it off. NBC's Mike Taibbi has the story tonight from Los Angeles.

Reporter: They were an undermanned high school football team from Fremont, California.

We want to prepare the kids the best we can for the rest of their lives. get them, no matter what happens on the field and how much we push them we want to prepare them for their real life.

Reporter: small but quick, the eagles were pushed to practice fast and play that way. the hurry-up offense with each snap within seven seconds of the referee's spot.

We set up fast. we snap the ball fast.

Reporter: and what do you know? it worked. one bigger opponent after another bit the dust. almost all of them public schools. and the eagles turned deafness into an advantage, using sign language and color coded sideline boards to call plays to that athletes who can hear couldn't figure out.

They can talk to each other and they don't have to create a new language where as a matter of fact we might be at a disadvantage.

Reporter: it is tough enough growing up Deaf, but over the space of a dozen football games, these kids proved their metal and their equality to the hearing world and to themselves. motivation?

They think we're nothing, that they can beat us and that we won't beat them and they have a big ego.

Reporter: and reward.

We shocked them and then they realized oh, yeah. Deaf kids can play.

Reporter: for their extraordinary season, " Sports Illustrated" has honored the eagles as one of the country's accomplished underdogs. more important, what these young athletes have already won.

What happened on the football field applies in real life. I'll always remember playing football here. of course I feel like it's going to help me become a better man.

Reporter: a message sent and received loud and clear. Mike Taibbi, NBC News, Los Angeles.

Kansas Budget Cuts Are Bad News For KSD

OLATHE, KS (KSHB NBC) - Kansas budget cuts could mean bad news for the Kansas State School for the Deaf.

A mandate to cut the budgets for Kansas state agencies could be bad news for a school in Olathe, Kan., that's been helping children since 1861.

In the kindergarten classroom at the Kansas School for the Deaf , kids are learning to communicate using their hands instead of their voices. They are immersed in American Sign Language.

Like the 140 other students at the school, they will be immersed in deaf culture during their years here, learning to cope in a hearing world.

Mary Grove is a KSD senior. She's been a student here since she was 4 years old.

"This is my second home, you know, and the people here are my family,’' she said.

KSD doesn't just serve the kids on campus -- its outreach program supports 255 students and 87 teachers in 108 districts across the state....

NBC Discriminates Deaf Community ?

INDIANAPOLIS - At Super Bowl XLVI, The NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique performed the anthem America the Beautiful in American sign language, so very disappointed that Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV the national broadcast, which is not the first time the NBC has done it at major event. "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson rendition of the national anthem unsurprisingly finished her version clocked in at one minute, 34 second less time than Rachel Mazique's lengthy one minute, 54 second version of the song.

The National Association for the Deaf announced that the NAD Miss Deaf America, Rachel Mazique, will perform the national anthem and America the Beautiful in American sign language (ASL) at the upcoming Super Bowl XLVI in Indianapolis on February 5, 2012. The NAD in partnership with PepsiCo worked closely with the National Football League to ensure that America's songs would be delivered in ASL at the Super Bowl. The NAD hopes that the national broadcast will include the signed performance. Actually ironic video showed Rachel Mazique wasn't on TV! very typical examples.

Rachel Mazique unseen on television at Super Bowl.
Video by XLVISuperBowl

Numerous Deaf people of the community in the United States very disappointed with the NBC didn't show Rachel Mazique signing the National Anthem on the Super Bowl as seen on the video. Must be a more reason to hate it. what a shame! no camera was focused on her. NBC didn't even try to get Rachel Mazique on TV. Is NBC anti-deaf? Is AG Bell, and HB 1367 in Indiana has been agreement with the NBC to avoids the signed performance on the national broadcast? The NAD and PepsiCo typically meaning of failing cooperation with the NBC/NFL as well? The Deaf community wondering what the NAD are working with? or an epic fail? Deaf people hopefully the NAD give an explanation why does Rachel Mazique isn't on TV after all...

Update: Statements from Ms. Rachel Mazique's Facebook Page. She was posted at FB:

"To my family, friends, fans, supporters: Thank you for rooting for me. I'm as disappointed as you are that American Sign Language gained no exposure. ASL was also not shown on the JumboTron inside the stadium as far as I know. I have poor quality videos of me signing...blurry...signs and face cut off at some points.. shaky film because my mom was being pushed around on the sidelines...not sure if they are worth posting.."

"I am so sorry you didn't get the chance to see me on TV and I thank you all for your support and excitement. I'm re-posting this from someone's comment on my status: "Post your videos! And I got this off someone else's status: Found this email address in case you are interested in writing NBC regarding Rachel Mazique not being shown in the pre-game: nbcsportshelp@nbcuni.com." Some are also tweeting to NBC. If enough people in the general public express their disappointment, next year's performer should get air time."
