Angela McCaskill Placed On Administrative Leave From Gallaudet

WASHINGTON - (ABC7) - The Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion at Gallaudet University has been placed on paid administrative leave, after allegedly signing a Maryland referendum petition opposing same sex marriage.

Dr. Angela McCaskill became a Deputy to the President and the Associate Provost for Diversity and Inclusion in January 2011. This afternoon, President Hurwitz released the following statement to students, faculty and staff:

"I want to inform the community that I have placed Dr. Angela McCaskill on paid administrative leave effective immediately. It recently came to my attention that Dr. McCaskill has participated in a legislative initiative that some feel is inappropriate for an individual serving as Chief Diversity Officer; however, other individuals feel differently. I will use the extended time while she is on administrative leave to determine the appropriate next steps taking into consideration the duties of this position at the university. In the meantime an interim Chief Diversity Officer will be announced in the near future."

As first reported in the blog Planet DeafQueer, “a Gallaudet faculty member, who at this time wishes to remain anonymous, noticed Dr. McCaskill’s name, address and signature on the anti-gay marriage petition. The Washington Post - Gallaudet diversity officer on paid leave after signing petition on same-sex marriage law.

Gallaudet University’s chief diversity officer was placed on paid leave on Wednesday after school officials learned that she signed a petition challenging a new same-sex marriage law in Maryland.

Angela McCaskill, who has worked for more than 20 years at the university for the deaf and hard of hearing, was among more than 200,000 Maryland residents to sign a petition seeking a referendum vote on the measure. The petition succeeded, and enactment of the law was put on hold pending the outcome of the referendum in November.

On Wednesday, Gallaudet President T. Alan Hurwitz said he had placed McCaskill on administrative leave... ASL is a Gift Translated by Deanne Bray

"ASL is a Gift" is a poem written by Julie Rems-Smario and translated by Deanne Bray. Final revision of ASL translation on September 21, 2012. It was June 2012 when Wayne Betts gave one small suggestion in adding something to ASL. He signed SI5S. I expanded on that idea and made this version into the translation that I am fully content and will stick to this. Here is my ASL translation of ASL is a GIFT in American Sign Language. Happy Autumn!

Amplification and Cochlear Implants Are Simply A Hoax!

Amplification and Cochlear Implants Are Simply A Hoax! Vlog in American sign language.

The amplification and cochlear implants are artificial and man-made. They are for awareness, not acquisition, of the world of sounds, and they are therefore as individualistic as playing piano, trombone or flute. There is no guarantee to the benefit of them. To me as a native signer, amplification and cochlear implants are sumply a hoax, pumping hot balloons for many innocent people, figuratively speaking, into creating numerous unthinkable hostilities toward ASL, Deaf Education and, above all, the Deaf.

This video clip is Familiar with 'Dirty Signs With Kristin'

Does Carly Stong's video clip that copycat such a "wanna-be" by 'Dirty Signs With Kristin' videos?

'Everyday is Carly Day' - Featuring Carly Stong in which a video clip was under FIRE for flubbing a many wrong gestures of dirty signs and insulted the ASL-Culture community.

Numerous ASL-users community have objected to the video clip on the grounds that it features incomprehensible signs that from Carly Stong's 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word' which this is a saddening testimony to how ignored and oppressed the ASL-users community. Carly is just bad in signing and her selection of really mocking and ludicrous phrases to "teach" to the public shows a huge disrespect for ASL-users and Deaf people.

Deaf viewers are outraged by nonsensical signing claiming 'How to Talk Dirty Without Saying a Word', which leading campaigner who want a good quality of learning american sign language for deaf and hearing adults as Carly claimed.

Deaf viewers said incoherent video clip makes second-class citizens out of disability sufferers, ASL-users community view is that what Carly is doing is a classic case of exploitation and wrong message to the hearing people who is learning in ASL. This is a phrase and no-so-subtle message for Carly Stong, who butchers and disrespects the langauge of the american sign language community for cheap laughs.

Responds on NAD & Deaf Community

Video: About National Association of the Deaf & Dennis Daugaard in American Sign Language.

Here is the transcript of the 25-minute long vlog:

The purpose of this vlog is to explain everything regarding Deaf people's response on National Association of the Deaf (NAD) for making a bad pick by inviting the Governor of South Dakota. This vlog also will include the transcript so that hearing people & Deaf people who does not know ASL will be able to understand why many Deaf people are protesting about the bad pick which NAD, so far, hadn't addressed this issue.

National Association of the Deaf was founded in 1880 in response to the Milan Conference of 1880. Why? The International Congress on Education of the Deaf was held in Italy. All delegates except for one at ICED were hearing. They voted to support the oral education and banned the use of sign language for Deaf children at any deaf schools. The result is that many Deaf teachers lost their jobs at many Deaf schools across this country as it also messed up Deaf Education. This was the Dark Ages for Deaf people. NAD was established to protect the Deaf people's voice, civil rights & American Sign Language. Wonder why the NAD is not strong like the National Association for Advancement of Colored People (NAACP)? NAACP was able to have the access to media and make a difference in many people's lives, why can't the NAD have that as well? That part is a long story that will explain why NAD is like that but first, I want to focus on history of NAD.

Video by ridor9th

16 years after NAD was established (1896), there was first woman to serve on NAD Board. Is it awesome? Does it means that NAD is progressive than the rest of the United States since women were allowed to vote in 1920? No, it is not true. That position has no-voting power. Their duties are focused only on social issues, events, morals, childbearing, child care - these are women's duties. They cannot get involved on Education, Civli Rights & Law with the rest of male-dominated NAD Board. When the 19th Amendment was ratified into the United States Constitution in 1920 to grant all women the right to vote, NAD still did not permit its Deaf women to vote until 1964!

44 YEARS!! Why? Maybe the NAD resisted this change because they were wary of hearing people due to the devastating effects of Milan Conference. Then a year later in 1965, African-Americans (both men & women) were allowed to join the membership of NAD. As for GLBT individuals, NAD finally included them not a long time ago roughly about 10-15 years ago. Really, NAD was aware that there were many Deaf GLBT individuals but they chose not to recognize the GLBT individuals for decades. Now the GLBT people will have its first-ever Luncheon at 2012 NAD Conference in Louisville, Kentucky. NAD hosts biennial national conferences held in different cities across the country. For many years, the NAD Board as well as its Region I, II, III, IV Board tend to be populated by Deaf people with college degrees. For many years, NAD's growth was hindered due to low contributions, most likely because many Deaf people lost their jobs after the infamous Milan Conference of 1880. They slowly raised the funds for decades and finally has a permanent home in Silver Spring, Maryland. They also established the Youth Leadership Camp as well. They added little by little to strengthen the organization. As of now, NAD will have its conference in Louisville. This conference's theme is ...

Every two years, NAD tends to select a theme that will reflect on its conference. This year, in Louisville has this theme, "Nothing About Us, Without Us". This conference is expected to be the largest one in history because NAD is partnering with Kentucky Commission for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (KCDHH)'s famous & popular event called DeaFestival. That DeaFestival is extremely popular with Deaf people who does not have college background, averaging several thousands of spectators from many states. This is an opportunity for everyone to capitalize on touching important issues at the conference.

NOTE: If you want to read the complete transcript, contact me via inbox. I'll send you the rest as YouTube does not permit me to give you a complete transcript of my vlog: ridor9th

Deaf Community Met President Obama

Video: Deaf community met president Barack Obama in American Sign Language.

WASHINGTON - Deaf community stood just a few feet away from Barack Obama. The president, busy shaking hands, looked right at them. “It was like he was waiting for us to say something,” Stephon said later. So the 26-year-old Prince George’s Community College student took his cue and spoke to President Obama in his first language: American Sign Language. “I am proud of you,” Stephon signed. The president, almost involuntary, instinctively, immediately signed back. “Thank you,” Obama replied. This is one of those moments that humanize the office of the presidency.

Stephon born DEAF, and justifiably proud, Stephon told us later he had no idea he’d be seated in the VIP section so close to the president and Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley at the March 15th event. But what a difference a seating assignment can make. “When I shook his hand it did not feel like he was superior to me,” Stephon said. “He was just a humble man.”... 'What It's Like To Be Deaf ?'

Video: 'What It's Like To Be Deaf' in American Sign Language version.

This is Katie describing what it's like to be Deaf. For those who cannot understand her sign language, this is what she is saying...

'What It's Like To Be Deaf ?'

People have asked me. I have no problem answering or explaining how I lost my hearing. But to explain what it's like to be Deaf? It's very Simple: I can't hear. No, wait... it is much more than that. It is similar to a goldfish in a bowl, always observing things going on. People talking all the... times. It is like a man on his own island among foreigners.

Isolation is no stranger to me. Relatives and friends say hi and bye, but I sit among them for 5 hours trying to be involved. Natural curiosity perks up upon seeing great laughter, crying, anger.

Inquiring only to meet with a "Never mind", "Nothing" or "Oh, it's not important". Seeing them laugh and look at me makes me think they are making fun of my disability when they weren't.

Video by KatieFigurestar98

Getting a summarized statement of the whole day. I'm supposed to smile to show happiness. Little do they know how truly miserable I am trying to understand. People are in control of language usage, I am at loss and really uncomfortable there. Always feeling like an outsider among the hearing people, Even though it was not their intention. They are always assuming that I am part of them by my physical presence, but not understanding the importance of communication. I must make the choices constantly, no wonder why I choose Deaf friends? I get such great pleasure at the Deaf events, before I even realize it, it is already the end of the day. Our language is common, we understand each other clearly.

Being at loss of control of the environment which is communication we rely on such technology such as smartphones to communicate with hearing people, and yet some people panic and retreat to avoid Deaf people like the plague.

But again we Deaf people are still human beings With dreams, desires, and goals sometimes we just feel the need to Belong, just like everyone else. That's how I am Deaf.

Please support our cause and go to http://www.change.org/petitions/oppose-hb-1367 and sign our petition.
