Nbcbayarea.com - One billion people use Facebook around the world. Its reach is undisputed and unparalleled, but its impact on one specific community has opened up doors to a new world for the Deaf.
Christina Teani, 34, of South San Francisco is a teacher for special needs students. She understands putting in that extra bit of effort because she was born with what she calls “an invisible disability” unable to hear without wearing a hearing aid.
“You can often feel like that sometimes you are not good enough, you don’t feel like you’re part of a group,” Teani explained. “Human relationships are all about intimacy, getting to know people, feeling like you belong in a group and if you’re not able to connect, you emotionally feel left out.”
But her life has changed, much like it has for her Deaf friend, Sarah McBride of Palo Alto.
“With Facebook, I’m able to communicate with my friends through chat,” she said.
These women say the social media site has opened up a whole new world to them, offering up not only quick chats with friends, but the ability to share memories through pictures and videos especially satisfying for them because it’s one of the first times they’ve been able to communicate the same way the hearing community does.
So when the opportunity came up to visit the company that made it happen, they didn’t hesitate. Together with friends, they took tour of Facebook headquarters in Menlo Park to celebrate the changes they’ve experienced in their lives.

Interpreter for the Deaf Bill in Arkansas

LITTLE ROCK, AK - Last summer, KATV put the spotlight on a problem at Arkansas Rehabilitation Services. A woman had been hired as an interpreter for the Deaf but she lacked the skills to do the job. That particular issue has been resolved. But a larger problem remains.
While our coverage helped get the interpreter in question transferred to another job and now there is a qualified professional in that position serving ARS clients….the same thing could happen again. Regular viewers of Little Rock city board meetings recognize the man in the bubble: Ray James.
James, who lives in Mayflower, and other interpreters help keep the Deaf and hearing-impaired community knowledgeable about the goings-on of city government. James is professionally licensed nationally and in the state of Texas, but he says Arkansas is behind the times when it comes to making sure interpreters are qualified.
"Between 10 to 215 years," says James. "We're that far behind with legislative mandates or a commission for the Deaf. We've never had that in Arkansas."
State Senator Bryan King is sponsoring a bill that, if it becomes law, will ensure that all interpreters for the Deaf or hard of hearing be licensed and qualified.
King was joined while presenting the bill this week by James and Cheryl Thomas of Cabot, another licensed interpreter.
"We interpret in every facet of life," explains Thomas. "From court rooms to people's personal lives. And if somebody is not a professional interpreter, is not trained and is not skilled you don't know what you're getting. You could be opening yourself up to a lawsuit."
King's bill is currently being amended to add a deadline for getting licensed and to add a grace period for interpreters to get licensed if they are discovered to be practicing without one.
The proposed penalty for interpreting without a license could be as high as $500, and up to $1,000 for hiring an unqualified interpreter.

Technology Helps Deaf Students at Gallaudet

VOA - Gallaudet University in Washington is the world's only university with programs designed for Deaf students and those who are hard-of-hearing. But hearing disorders do not keep students from learning because of the university's heavy use of technology.
Students use interactive technologies in and out of the classroom, technologies such as webcam interactions on Skype. More than 90 percent of Gallaudet's classes use some form of online communication. Professor Gene Mirus says technology is important in the learning process. "So there are, you know, televisions and webcams and things like that. Students are able to record themselves doing projects in sign language, and do that at home. We use a lot of computer technologies, and webcams and things like that."

Sonam Jain, a student from Sri Lanka, says his years at Gallaudet have offered experiences different from his childhood. "Sri Lanka has states. And they don't have one standardized sign language. So, in the United States, for example, there are signs for almost everything that you would ever want to talk about.
In Sri Lanka, there isn't. And so there are many things you find it very difficult to talk about in Sri Lanka." Another student says Gallaudet has helped him with his communication skills, especially with ASL - American Sign Language.
"When I grew up, I was signing in a way that was more English-like. Here at Gallaudet, I sign more like I sign in ASL - more visual and the communication is much easier, and the social life is wonderful here." That increased ability to communicate helps many students. "A lot of networking and reaching out to people and I've learned from - I've had role models that I've learned from here.
They provide workshops, there are a lot of sporting activities, intramural events that I've been involved with." "Most students increase their self-confidence, and improve their communication abilities and they leave Gallaudet ready to face the world." I'm Jeri Watson.

OCDAC Leader Dies at Age 50
VIDEO: Deaf community leader known as Uncle Ruckus dies at age 50. Richard Roehm was a founder of the Santa Ana-based Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center.
SANTA ANA – Richard Roehm aka Iron Teeth, chairman and a founder of the Orange County Deaf Advocacy Center, died Feb. 6. He was 50.
Roehm, who lived in the French Park area, suffered a heart attack and died at Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, said Beth Koenig, the executive director of the nonprofit.
Roehm grew up in Glendale, graduated form Rancho Alamitos High School in 1981 and received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Cal State Fullerton. He worked for Disneyland, left the company and was disabled by the time he helped found the Santa Ana-based Deaf Advocacy Center in 1998, said Koenig. He served as CEO and president until 2010, when he became board chairman and Koenig became its executive director.
Roehm was a longtime fan of the "Law and Order" television series. She said he loved learning about and tracking volcanoes and earthquakes, enjoyed seeing Old Faithful eruptions via a webcam, and cared about animals, such as the pet lizard he kept, and Ruby, a mixed-breed dog who was his companion for many years.
Roehm had been hard of hearing as a child and became Deaf at age 11, Koenig said. She said he believed that nonprofits turned away people who needed help, so decided to start the Deaf Advocacy Center. The agency helps people with disabilities find employment and housing provides training in such areas as Braille, American Sign Language, computer skills and personal finances, and helps Deaf people with poor reading skills fill out forms.
The agency he helped found runs on a budget of $30,000 to $45,000 a year, mostly from sales on its eBay store and from donations, Koenig said. It relies on a roll of about 200 volunteers, about 20 of whom are regulars and about five of whom make up its core group, she said.

Michael Hubbs has his sights set on competing in Speedskating for the 2014 Winter Olympics. Needs help funding his training so he can concentrate on his dream!
Michael Hubbs is a speed skater with his sights set on competing in the 2014 Winter Olympics. After overcoming the challenge of being Deaf, he is determined to not let any obstacle get in the way of acheiving his goal.
Selling every item he owned, including his car, Michael paid for a one-way flight to Salt Lake City, UT, so he could train at the Olympic Oval.
In August 2011, Michael participated in the Desert Classic competition at the Utah Olympic Oval with the goal of setting personal best times. In the 500m, he shaved five seconds off his personal best time, and in the 1500m, he shaved 13 seconds off. He then won the overall bronze at the Eastern States Championship in September, and first place in the 500m at the American Cup that following month. He is grateful to the sport for changing his perspectives and helping him do something meaningful with his life.

NAD & Deaf's Public Health Concerns

While watching National Association of the Deaf's recent vlog found here at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSkoNrtNxwo announcing their latest projects, Deaf community noticed practically all NAD leaders and officers are overweight or out of shape.
Is it a concern? Yes.
Is it reflective of health issues as a Deaf Community? Unfortunately also yes as health crisis is highly prevalent within the Deaf community.
NAD should add initiatives in creating task force to raise our socioeconomic status, utilize several social constructs such as self-efficacy, social cognitive, and self determination theories in developing creative solutions towards healthier behaviors, create task force to address poor health status within our community, AND take personal accountability as leaders in setting examples for others by getting healthier themselves.

Deaf Want A Fair Hearing On Film & TV Subtitles

Valletta, Malta - The quality of life of Deaf people would dramatically improve if subtitles were introduced on TV and in cinemas, according to campaigners.
“Think how much general knowledge you get from the TV,” said Alison Vere from the Deaf People Association, which is behind the Subtitles Now campaign launched recently.
“With the exception of the five-minute Deaf News in Maltese sign language, local TV is inaccessible to Deaf and those hard of hearing,” she added.
Organised jointly with film culture NGO Kinemastik, Subtitles Now is promoting the introduction of sub-titles on TV and more screenings of subtitled movies in cinemas.

The campaign released a video on Youtube to drive home its message: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q5D_y2G5els.
It starts with sound and subtitles so that all people can understand what is happening, but then the captions disappear and all the dialogue is conducted in sign language.
Eventually the sound of Bob Dylan singing the words “How does it feel?” from Like a Rolling Stone can be heard and a caption asks, “How does it feel to see but not hear?”
Ms Vere said deafness was an invisible disability because it went unseen unless people were communicating in sign language or wearing visible hearing aids.
If their campaign is successful, it would “provide a quantum leap in the quality of life of Deaf Maltese and would also help increase Deaf literacy.”
Association president Steven Mulvaney visited the UK recently and was amazed to find he had the option of closed caption subtitles on every programme on the TV in his hotel room, available through the push of a button.

The Washington Post - Hot pink and yellow not black were the colors of choice for Laura Snyder-Gardner and Mary Ann Gardner’s memorial service Sunday.
The colors were bright and positive and radiated energy, exactly how those who loved them remembered the mother and daughter, who died last week in a Falls Church house fire.
Friends, family members and faculty turned into a sea of pink and yellow Mary Ann’s favorite colors as they gathered at Gallaudet University in Northeast Washington.
They fondly recalled Snyder-Gardner’s generous and nurturing spirit, with many students calling the Gallaudet math professor a “second mom.” And they mourned the loss of Mary Ann’s “radiant smile,” which friends and classmates said was infectious even from afar... Two people are confirmed dead after a raging inferno destroyed a Falls Church home Wednesday.

Capt. William Moreland, a spokesman with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said firefighters were called to the home in the 3100 block of Manor Rd. The entire single-level ranch-style home was completely engulfed when crews arrived.
Moreland said they will release the identities of the victims once family has been notified.
Steve Klass, who lives next door to the destroyed home, said he was awakened by a loud roaring sound at about 3:30 a.m. He said a woman who lived at the home, who was Deaf, could be heard screaming... Capt. William Moreland, a spokesman with Fairfax County Fire and Rescue, said firefighters were called to the home in the 3100 block of Manor Rd. The entire single-level ranch-style home was completely engulfed when crews arrived.
Moreland said they will release the identities of the victims once family has been notified.

Deaf people in Russia received a late, but very precious Christmas present when Russian Sign Language was formally recognised by the Russian government on the 30th December.
The President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who was re-elected last year, formally signed the long-awaited law that will improve the rights of sign language users.

The breakthrough came after years of campaigning by the All-Russian Society of the Deaf, including their President Valery Rukhledev. The development led to a very special new year's celebration for Deaf people in the country.
The good news from Russia comes nearly ten years after British Sign Language was recognised by the government in this country - in March 2003.

Anyone with some level of familiarity with Deaf people will agree that there are some deep philosophical differences in how we interact with, work with, and approach Deaf children.
As such anyone who purports to be an authority on Deaf people has an ethical responsibility to be transparent.
We find it disturbing that individuals such as Karl White continue to blatantly abuse their position by misleading the general public about Deaf people, languages, and medical intervention. This is done through intentional framing, through omission of facts, and through giving appearances of neutrality when in fact bias is present.
Here we discuss some of the things we noted and/or have questions about regarding his recent presentation at TEDxUSU (published on December 5, 2012).

Shooting Sandy Hook Elementary School 12 killed 100 rounds shot reports in Newtown Connecticut. Authorities in Connecticut responded to a shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown Friday morning, the local NBC station reports.
Police reported multiple deaths, several wounded children and at least one injured teacher, according to the Hartford Courant.
One gunman is dead, authorities told ABC News. There are unconfirmed reports of a second suspect. Two guns were recovered from the shooter, according to CNN.
A hospital representative in Danbury told NBC that medical facilities admitted three victims from Sandy Hook School.
Reports say that the alleged shooter appeared in the buildings main office at about 9:40 a.m., approximately 30 minutes after the school day began.
Students were escorted out of the building single-file. There are approximately 626 students enrolled in kindergarten through 4th grade classes at Sandy Hook Elementary, with another 46 faculty members, Newtown Patch reported.

AUCKLAND - New Zealand’s Deaf community will be greatly affected by Television New Zealand’s decision to drop its Teletext magazine service. The service, which was introduced in 1984 primarily to supply Deaf people with greater access to news and information, will be disbanded.New Zealand’s Deaf community will be greatly affected by TVNZ’s decision to drop its Teletext magazine service. The service, which was introduced in 1984 primarily to supply Deaf people with greater access to news and information, will be disbanded by TVNZ early next year.
Deaf Aotearoa Chief Executive Lachlan Keating says the decision is a disappointing one for the Deaf community, especially the older members who regularly use Teletext.
“Over one-third of the Deaf community either doesn’t have or doesn’t receive good internet access, so relies on Teletext to remain up-to-date with news and other essential information from throughout the country,” says Mr Keating.
“They also use the service to access the Deaf pages, which provide information on relevant events and activities.” Mr Keating says TVNZ has stated that it will work with special interest groups affected by this change.

Growth of Viral Video Leaves Deaf Community in the Dark
Washington Post - Growth of viral video leaves Deaf people in the dark.Viral videos may be good for sharing ideas and spreading funny foreign pop hits, but they are leaving millions of Deaf and Hearing Impaired people out of the loop.
Online video is becoming a more ubiquitous part of American life. Netflix videos made up one-third of online data used in the United States last year. YouTube expects 90 percent of online traffic to be video in the next few years. By 2016, Cisco estimates, 1.2 million minutes of video will be streamed or downloaded every second.
That video explosion has been great for small-film and TV producers, who are able to reach an audience without a big studio budget, and fans of niche programming. But in some ways, it has left the deaf and hard-of-hearing community starting from scratch after years of advocating for captions on traditional television.
“We could be back to square one,” said Christian Vogler, director of the Technology Access Program at Gallaudet University.
The rise of e-mails, instant messages and social media was a godsend to the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community, which embraced the new, text-based ways to communicate.
“In the mid- to late 1990s, it was close to the ideal medium,” Vogler said. But as the Web evolved to include more video, he said, old barriers to communication resurfaced. ... Deaf Dart Players Compete for National Title in St. John's
ST. JOHN'S (CBC) - Deaf dart players compete for national title in St. John'sTop dart throwers from all over Canada are in St. John's this weekend for a unique championship.
Competitors are vying for one of the top sporting titles for the nation's Deaf community, the Canadian Deaf Darts Championship.
The salons in the Capitol Hotel are strikingly quiet, yet full of non-stop action and people chatting.
"Darts is a fantastic sport. It's probably the top Deaf sport," said the event's chair, Bryan Johnson, speaking through sign language interpreter, Debbie Newport.
"It's sometimes difficult when you're playing with a mixed league of both Deaf and hearing," he added. "At least this way, there is no barrier, we can just chat freely."

Chelesa Lately TV Show Under Fire For Mocks Sign Language
LOS ANGELES - Chelesa Lately TV show under fire for mocks sign language.
Late-night host Chelsea Handler (of the Chelsea Lately Show, on E! Network) has found herself in the center of controversy, due to this skit (air date: Oct 30, 2012) which many members of the ASL-users community say mocks and makes fun of the language they use to communicate: ASL (American Sign Language). In the skit, a member of the cast mocks Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ASL Interpreter Lydia Callis, who translated for the Mayor's Hurricane Sandy press conferences, as seen on YouTube video.
Many people unfamiliar with ASL and the plight of the Oralism and Hard of Hearing don't realize that facial expressions and body movements are a part of ASL, and hence it is a protected activity, with communication considered a 'major life activity' under the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).

And what some with hearing (like Chelsea) would consider as "over-exaggerated" facial expressions and body movements are used for a good reason, not to "editorialize" or to be "passionate", but to communicate linguistic elements that those with hearing convey by way of vocal inflection, pitch, rhythm, pace, etc, and take for granted.
America’s largest Deaf organisation, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has written an open letter to the producers of a comedy show accusing them of “mocking” American Sign Language. Even, Deaf advocacy organization, Deaf Nation, released a letter the group sent to Handler.

Entertainment Television corporate lawyers probably will feel compelled to file a DMCA take-down notice with YouTube (as is their right, as they own the copyright), but I WILL file a DMCA counter-notice, demanding they file suit in Federal Court for copyright infringement. If they need to have a Judge lecture them on the basics of the principle of "fair use" exceptions allowed under U.S. Federal Copyright law, then they can be my guest.
On the other hand, I'm willing to consider relinquishing my right to this "fair use" (public commentary) if the "Chelsea Lately Show" offers a public apology for whatever insult and harm they have caused, perhaps with a statement educating their viewers as to why ASL interpreters must use non-gestural components as a part of ASL, to be broadcast on the Chelsey Lately show in an opening monologue, with a message that is deemed acceptable by representatives of the Deaf community (eg Deaf Nation).

Discussing my thoughts on issues surrounding TV Show - Chelesa Lately's skit on Hurricane Sandy's Breakout Star: Lydia Callis, NY Mayor Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter. Making fun of American Sign Language (ASL) in national spotlight is definitely lame and politically-incorrect despite unexpected and pricesless promotion of our beloved and respectful language recently. An interpreter's main role is to convey information rather than become a celebrity for the ignorant. Deaf people are aware of such mainstream fasincation with interpreters and our "beautiful" language. So I bring up the question that is OK to laugh at or laugh with and basically shrug this off? I think this whole publicity stunt is a turkey. I forgot to mention in my vlog: What if this was a terrorist attack rather than a weather crisis in NYC? OK to laugh at or with Lydia's national exposure? I think not.

Late-night host Chelsea Handler (of the Chelsea Lately Show, on E! Network) has found herself in the center of controversy, due to this skit (air date: Oct 30, 2012) which many members of the ASL-users community say mocks and makes fun of the language they use to communicate: ASL (American Sign Language). In the skit, a member of the cast mocks Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's ASL Interpreter Lydia Callis, who translated for the Mayor's Hurricane Sandy press conferences, as seen on YouTube video. Many people unfamiliar with ASL and the plight of the Oralism and Hard of Hearing don't realize that facial expressions and body movements are a part of ASL, and hence it is a protected activity, with communication considered a 'major life activity' under the American With Disabilities Act (ADA).

And what some with hearing (like Chelsea) would consider as "over-exaggerated" facial expressions and body movements are used for a good reason, not to "editorialize" or to be "passionate", but to communicate linguistic elements that those with hearing convey by way of vocal inflection, pitch, rhythm, pace, etc, and take for granted.
America’s largest Deaf organisation, the National Association of the Deaf (NAD) has written an open letter to the producers of a comedy show accusing them of “mocking” American Sign Language. Even, Deaf advocacy organization, Deaf Nation, released a letter the group sent to Handler.

E! Entertainment Television corporate lawyers probably will feel compelled to file a DMCA take-down notice with YouTube (as is their right, as they own the copyright), but I WILL file a DMCA counter-notice, demanding they file suit in Federal Court for copyright infringement. If they need to have a Judge lecture them on the basics of the principle of "fair use" exceptions allowed under U.S. Federal Copyright law, then they can be my guest.
On the other hand, I'm willing to consider relinquishing my right to this "fair use" (public commentary) if the "Chelsea Lately Show" offers a public apology for whatever insult and harm they have caused, perhaps with a statement educating their viewers as to why ASL interpreters must use non-gestural components as a part of ASL, to be broadcast on the Chelsey Lately show in an opening monologue, with a message that is deemed acceptable by representatives of the Deaf community (eg Deaf Nation).

Discussing my thoughts on issues surrounding TV Show - Chelesa Lately's skit on Hurricane Sandy's Breakout Star: Lydia Callis, NY Mayor Bloomberg's Sign Language Interpreter. Making fun of American Sign Language (ASL) in national spotlight is definitely lame and politically-incorrect despite unexpected and pricesless promotion of our beloved and respectful language recently. An interpreter's main role is to convey information rather than become a celebrity for the ignorant. Deaf people are aware of such mainstream fasincation with interpreters and our "beautiful" language. So I bring up the question that is OK to laugh at or laugh with and basically shrug this off? I think this whole publicity stunt is a turkey. I forgot to mention in my vlog: What if this was a terrorist attack rather than a weather crisis in NYC? OK to laugh at or with Lydia's national exposure? I think not.

Lydia Callis, the interpreter for Mayor Bloomberg during Hurricane Sandy, became famous on internet overnight because of her facial expressions. A number of Deaf people have expressed their objection against those who mock the interpreter and American Sign Language, especially the comedian Chelsea Handler. How should we, as Deaf individuals, response to such mockery of our culture and language?

I do have to use my voice so the hearing people can watch this too. I hope they understand too, because that was just uncalled for. I just learned that Saturday Night Live just made fun of us. It's spreading like wildfire!
