Artist statement:

This is for all those who have been and are bullied- may this inspire you to find courage and dialogue rather then bully!

This work is offered as a labor of love for all to take in and enjoy Katy Perry's "Firework". Thank you Katy Perry for writing this song of empowerment for all girls, women, and humans. Its my absolute my pleasure to set it on fire with American Sign Language and collaborate with Catalene, my inspiration, deafened koda "sister" who is an amazing young talent! In this piece Sherry Hicks features Catalene. Thanks everyone who worked on this project making it all possible! The expertise of the crew's talents is top notch and absolutely amazing. I'm grateful and honored to share this work with all of you. Enjoy this collaborative piece blending ASL and music constituting in what I call "musically inspired ASL storytelling". Short Film: 'Deaf Donald'

VIDEO: 'Deaf Donald' A short film in english subtitles.

This is a love story about two lovers separated by a language barrier. Based on the Shel Silverstein's poem and infamous a cartoonist sign language pictures known of 'Deaf Donald', this silent short explores the absence of understanding- missed opportunities due to miscommunication.

Deaf Donald met Talkie Sue

But I Love You was all he could do.

And Sue said, "Donald I sure do like you."

But I Love You was all he could do.

And Sue asked Donald, "Do you like me too?"

But I Love You was all he could do.

"Good-bye then, Donald, I'm leaving you."

But I Love You was all he could do.

And she left forever and she never knew

That I Love You means I Love You!

Jabberwocky 2012 ASL Video

stormFx presents: Jabberwocky 2012 American Sign Language video by Bjorn Storm. - An interpretation of Lewis Carroll's poem (1871) as a short film with subtitled for the modern viewer.

A quick note about my interpretation... please remember that 'interpretation' applies to more than simply taking words from one language to the next. In the essence of "gibberish translates to gibberish" the intent, mood, and even events can change depending on context. Once the Tulgey Wood is understood to be a modern day tavern instead of a dark and scarey forest, the doors opened to a far more liberal take on the original story. Please, please view the original, signed interpretation of this piece by Joe Velez and Eric Malzkuhn back in 1968 here: http://videocatalog.gallaudet.edu/?id=6518

***Disclaimer: "The video that follow is not appropriate for children. This interpretation includes signs considered profane or vulgar.

For all you ASL students out there watching: please avoid furiously trying to gloss the signs I've used for "borogove" and "frumious", etc. HAHA! :P This is to be taken as a work of art, not the work of a professional interpreter. Stop analyzing and enjoy! ;) Love you guys!

I have so many people to thank for helping make my Tulgey Wood come to life! Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, everyone who was involved. From all the colorful characters who showed up in their best for filming and stayed into the wee hours of night on a work day, to everybody behind the scenes, and perhaps more importantly - everybody who has had to listen to me blab about this endlessly for the last year - it wouldn't have been possible without you.

Marilyn Manson - This is the New S#*t: ASL Interpretation

American Sign Language Interpretation of Marilyn Manson's "This Is The New S#*t". by Bjorn Storm.

***Disclaimer: "The video that follow is not appropriate for children. This interpretation includes signs considered profane or vulgar. This is a song by Marilyn Manson, who is known for making music related to sensitive issues. References to politics, religion, and sex commonly appear in his lyrics.

Manson's music expresses his own opinion and perspectives... However, one need not share such perspectives in order to appreciate his music. I encourage us to continually challenge the meaning of "music for all". I believe access to music shouldn't be limited to "nice" or "safe" topics, but rather, full inclusion of the diversity that occurs within our music.

I ask that you keep an open mind while you watch. He hope you enjoy, and draw your own conclusions. Thank you". Bjorn took a chance on this - the video speaks for itself. Enjoy!

Nine Community Cinema 'Deaf Jam' in American Sign Language and captioned.

On October 13, 2011, Nine Community Cinema in St. Louis Missouri held a public screening of "Deaf Jam," at the Missouri History Museum. In Deaf Jam, Aneta Brodski seizes the day. She is a Deaf teen introduced to American Sign Language (ASL) Poetry, who then boldly enters the spoken word slam scene. In a wondrous twist, Aneta, an Israeli immigrant living in the Queens section of New York City, eventually meets Tahani, a hearing Palestinian slam poet.

The two women embark on a collaboration/performance duet - creating a new form of slam poetry that speaks to both the hearing and the Deaf. HIGHLAND, Mich (WXYZ) - They don’t hear music the way many of us do, but perhaps they hear it the way it’s supposed to be heard: through the whole body.

Ten-year-old Noah Rangel of Lake Orion is Deaf, but that didn’t stop him from feeling the pulse of the White Stripes’ song “We’re Going to be Friends” when he signed the lyrics in a new music video . “Instead of standing and talking and hearing the music like that, we can feel the music,” signed Noah, using American Sign Language. “We just stand and sign the song instead. So it’s really not that much different.”

The Deaf Professional Arts Network, also known as D-Pan, coordinated the music video this summer, shooting it in Bloomfield Hills and featuring children who are either deaf or hard-of-hearing.

Video by wxyztvdetroit

Rangel’s friend, Morgan Nimmo, also appeared in the video, which has gone viral. “I did good!” said seven-year old Morgan during an interview at her home in Highland. “I thought I was going to do bad, but I was great. I was proud of myself.” With more than 258,000 hits on YouTube.com in just a week and a half, she certainly has something to be proud of.

lyrics:

Fall is here, hear the yell back to school, ring the bell brand new shoes, walking blues climb the fence, books and pens I can tell that we're going to be friends.

Walk with me, Suzy Lee through the park and by the tree we will rest upon the ground and look at all the bugs we found then safely walk to school without a sound.

Well here we are, no one else we walked to school all by ourselves there's dirt on our uniforms from chasing all the ants and worms we clean up and now its time to learn.

Numbers, letters, learn to spell nouns, and books, and show and tell at playtime we will throw the ball back to class, through the hall teacher marks our height against the wall.

And we don't notice any time pass we don't notice anything we sit side by side in every class teacher thinks that I sound funny but she likes the way you sing.

Tonight I'll dream while I'm in bed when silly thoughts go through my head about the bugs and alphabet and when I wake tomorrow I'll bet that you and I will walk together again cause I can tell that we're going to be friends.
